Treatment for Fleas and Ticks

Currently get Prinovox from the vet, but it only treats Fleas, Worms and Mites. They don't have a treatment for Ticks, other than collars, and that just won't be possible for Arthur.

Have looked on line, and there is a product called Bravecto, but it is really expensive, and you need a prescription from the vet (£15), so just not possible, £30 for one pipette Shock.

Has anyone on this lovely thread, got a solution for tick treatment in cats? I see you can get Advocate, but everyone always seems to think this is not very good, and also needs a sodding prescription.... urgghhh

I use stronghold plus monthly and it treats fleas, ticks and some worms

I use provender every 6 months and it treats tapeworm that stronghold doesn't cover

Both are from the vet

Have you asked the vet for advice?

dementedpixie · 02/02/2021 17:47

I never had a problem with advocate when I used it - also treats fleas and some worms

Weedsnseeds1 · 02/02/2021 17:47

I use Bravecto, one pipette covers 3 months, not sure if you thought it was a monthly one?

Gatekeeper · 02/02/2021 17:57

I think Itch does flea, flea eggs and ticks

Gatekeeper · 02/02/2021 17:58

If you Google Itch flea treatments it will bring info up

Advocate and Prinovox have same active ingredients.

I know fipronil (frontline, itch, Bob Martin etc) is crap for fleas now but it is supposed to work on ticks too, might be worth checking whether it's still effective against ticks.

Oh thanks. I missed that. That does make a difference cost wise.

Interesting. I wonder why our Vets went from one to the other then. Maybe cost?

Thanks for replies. The main issue seems to be that there aren't many treatments for ticks for cats. There are more for dogs. My cat get lots of ticks, we get them in house, which is horrible. He has dropped them on the floor, the sofa, and my bed! We are in a hotspot for ticks, and DH got Lyme a couple of years ago, so we would really like to be proactive and at least keep them out of the house.

I saw some herbal stuff on-line, but you had to put it in a sprayer and mist the cat Shock. Well that's not going to happen is it!!

Advocate doesn't treat ticks.

BadEyeBri · 03/02/2021 11:28

OP you could try a seresto collar? As long as you aren't adverse to collaring your cat. It's not an old style flea collar. These ones actually do work. It lasts for 8 months and is about £30ish.

dementedpixie · 03/02/2021 11:29

Can you ask if they have stronghold plus?

dementedpixie · 03/02/2021 11:31

Or ask for a prescription for stronghold plus. It would be instead of prinovox not as well as it

The vets do suggest this, but I just don't think it's going to work. We are very rural, and he is a big active cat. He often gets caught on barbed wire from a fence into the field he jumps, I therefore think a collar would not be suitable. The field is where he gets the tick from!

Bravecto certainly seems to work for ticks, we are in a Lyme area too and I've only found one tick on him in three years. Before it was every week in season!
If the every three months makes it more reasonable cost wise for you, I would recommend.
We do use a 3 monthly wormer too, Bravecto doesn't cover all worms (and he's a serial killer and consumer of anything he gets hold of)!

SciFiScream · 06/02/2021 13:24

I was going to start a thread about treatments for cats. We get bravecto and profender for our 2 cats. They get given them once every three months.

This costs £70. So £35 a cat for three months treatment.

This is a good deal isn't it? No point trying to get a better deal?

Their annual vaccinations are £51 each.

Our (wonderful) vet has a plan but we checked it out and we're £100 cheaper doing it bu paying as needed rather than joining the plan.

The annual plan will make more sense when older and need more frequent vet visits.

BigWoollyJumpers · 09/02/2021 11:19

Just to tie up the thread for anyone interested, vet is exchanging my Prinovxo to Frontline. I must admit, I was surprised, as again, I didn't think Frontline was very good? Anyway, it covers everything inc. ticks, so I am happy with that.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 09/02/2021 11:22

Frontline isn't effective in a lot of cases so it might treat ticks but you could end up with fleas instead

That's what I thought - which one is worse...... actually I think ticks are worse, but that's probably because DH had Lyme. The worst you can get from fleas is allergic reaction to bites...... which actually I also get, but at least you can comb out fleas quite easily. Hey ho.
