Could we have a cat?

DH casually remarked the other day that now the neighbours are moving, we could consider getting a cat. (We felt before that there would be too many cats nearby and theirs was very territorial of our garden!)

Before I get my heart set on the idea, is it really possible for someone with a cat allergy (me but potentially DS too) to live with a cat (we only have carpet in one room - DS’ room, if that helps?)? I know no cats are truly hypoallergenic but would something low shedding/low fel d 1 and lots of hoovering be possible? We have two small DC (2yo and baby) - toddler has grown up with animals (we have rabbits and chickens, and other family remembers have dogs) and knows how to behave with them. Our house isn’t large but we have lots of outdoor space, including outbuildings, if the cat needed space away from DCs. I’m on maternity leave but will be returning to work PT at some point in the summer/early autumn so the house would be empty approx 8 hours two days per week but otherwise there’d be someone at least in and out of the house.

Is it doable or am I getting overexcited? 😬

Yes my DM has a cat allergy, she got a short haired cat and takes an antihistamine every day and has been fine

You could, but I wouldn't want to subject myself to it personally.

What if daily antihistamines don't work and you're left feeling miserable - would be able to rehome the cat?

A domestic moggy can live 15-20 years. That's a long time if you're allergic and struggling.
