Cat with sore eyes

Afternoon all. My lovely Wilson has sore eyes. No other eyelids showing, just a bit red and irritated. He's fine in himself, doing the naughty stuff he does. I've cleaned them with black tea and am going to give him some kitty painkiller. Keep your fingers crossed all is fine and no trip to the vet is needed. Picture attached of him just because.

How do you have kitty painkiller?.

Ludo19 · 31/01/2021 15:47

If his eyes are sore he needs a trip to the vet, vets prescribe eye drops specific to that infection. Untreated eye infections can cause ulcers, cysts and worst case scenario removal of eye. I'm a veterinary nurse.

Mabelface · 31/01/2021 15:47

From when his sister had a little op. It's kitty version of antiflammitory.

Ludo, that's where he'll be going tomorrow if no improvement tonight.

I’d book him in regardless, eyes are soft and deteriorate quickly.

Cats hide pain well, by the time their pawing the eye it’s gone further than we’d let ourselves go.

Mabelface · 31/01/2021 17:47

I'll be speaking to them in the morning. He's not pawing his eyes, no temp and fit in himself. They do like to do these things over the weekend, don't they!

It is the traditional time to be ill. Also bank holidays and the day before you go away.

violetbunny · 01/02/2021 05:22

Last time my cat had an eye issue, the vet said not to wait with bringing him in as they can become serious quite quickly. I'd take him straight away if that's an option.

Mabelface · 01/02/2021 16:47

Spoken to the vet and he's having a look at him tomorrow and to keep up with cleaning his eyes with tea in the meantime.

Good luck for tomorrow OP.

@Ludo19 and others - I find it hard to tell when an eye problem is sufficient to take to the vet. My elderly lady (nearly 14) has very runny eyes and sometimes gets very blinky, but it doesn’t most of the time seem to bother her. Am I overlooking something serious?

Prestel · 01/02/2021 17:32

@DeusEx
Now you've noticed it and are wondering about it I think you're going to have to make an appointment at the vets to check it out. It's probably nothing too serious, but only a vet can tell you for sure.

Ludo19 · 01/02/2021 23:12

@DeusEx

When you say runny, do you mean gunky? Is there a discharge, is it thick and yellow? I do agree with the above post, I'd err on the side of caution and get it checked out.

DenisetheMenace · 01/02/2021 23:14

Anti inflammatory (is it metacam?) won’t help if it’s an eye infection.
I’d call the vet.

DenisetheMenace · 01/02/2021 23:15

Ah, see that you are. Hope it’s nothing major. He’s a beaut.

Ludo19 · 01/02/2021 23:15

@Mabelface, good luck for tomorrow. Also please don't give Wilson his sister's medication. Please tell the vet you've given him some of this medication. Same rules apply as with us, I wouldn't take antibiotics meant for someone else and you should be finishing the course.

Mabelface · 02/02/2021 09:15

The vet is aware 😊

He's fine. A slight eye infection and some drops to clear it. Smile

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/02/2021 15:29

Oh good. How is he liking drops?.

Ludo19 · 02/02/2021 19:06

Glad you got it sorted. Sending Wilson a chin scratch!

Toddlerteaplease · 02/02/2021 22:41

Can't see the problem with sharing metacam. You'd not have two separate bottles of calpol for kids.

Mabelface · 03/02/2021 11:45

He's not a fan of the drops at all 😂

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 03/02/2021 12:43

I bet he’s not 😺. Torture dressed up as treatment.

@Toddlerteaplease dh has tried to give his dn a symbicourt inhaler 😲. It’s a wonder there aren’t more problems with POM being passed around.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/02/2021 12:53

@Fluffycloudland77 I'm not sure I'd share an inhaler.
Snorg is pretty good with her eyedrops.

Mabelface · 05/02/2021 17:07

He's being okay. I have to sneak up on him when he's asleep. There's a marked improvement already Smile

Oh good. Efficiency is key with eye drops 😀.
