Low moulting cat?

Is there such a thing? Other half loves cats. We currently have 2. The hair drives me crazyBlush I would choose to not have any more in the future. He won't be without cats.

Is there such a thing as a low moulting cat? Or basically what breed has the least amount of hair loss? Or shortest hair? Though not bald Confused

Also, is it possible to teach cats not to scratch furniture? I'd love to have nice things but the cats ruin everything. Carpet. Sofas. Chairs. Material beds etc. Or have I just got to resign myself to horrible tatty furniture forever?

Yes you can certainly get cats that moult very little, but you'd paying pedigree prices.

There's an annoying catch-all phrase 'Domestic Shorthair (DSH)' not to be confused with British Shorthair, which is an example of what you need.
They are beautiful cats and as far as I know they have a lower moult rate than others.

Try also searching for 'hypoallergenic cats'. My late cousin had a severe allergy to fibres and per hairs but they had two Siberian cats that he was fine with.

My long haired Persian doesn't shed at all. Shed black and I can wear white with no issues. When she dies she'd it comes off in clumps and is easy to pick up. My short haired exotic sheds more, it isn't horrendous. My parents have a Scottish fold BSH cross. He has a very short coat and doesn't shed at all.

Our moggy sheds more than any cat I have ever had! Other moggies shed a lot less. They vary a lot.
I have met some longer haired cats who don't shed anywhere near as much but you would need to groom them more regularly.
Robot vacuum cleaner could be the answer?

Interesting. I'll definitely look into those breeds. I'm relieved to know we might have a chance at a less hairy life Grin

@Vinorosso74 it's more the hairy furniture. Dirty hairy patches on sofas, car seat if left out (even for a matter of minutes), chairs, on any blanket, towel. One cat will even search out a tea towel or a hat left on the table and sleep on it. Not interested in any of the lovely beds they have Hmm

We have 2 domestic shorthair siblings. One sheds like crazy, the other hardly at all. So weird.

BadEyeBri · 30/01/2021 19:25

We have a British short hair and she is a moulting machine. Needs brushed every other day. Our Egyptian Mau has a super soft, sleek coat that feels like silk and drops very little hair. The 5(!) domestic short hairs are somewhere in between.

RandomMess · 30/01/2021 19:28

Devon or Cornish Rex, they do moult but very little generally.

Beamur · 30/01/2021 19:31

My shorthaired orientals barely seem to shed. Semi longhaired only sheds a small amount.
I used to have a Calico who shed like anything.
Maybe it's the colour to consider as well. My Calico left white hair everywhere...

Siberian's lack the protein in their saliva that most people are allergic to. They are the complete opposite to low shedding twice a year they have a massive moult and your house is covered in hair ( and vomited up hairballs). My Siberian is currently moulting to get her full winter coat my cream carpet is currently Tabby.

Rex breeds both Cornish, Devon and Selkirk Rex are low shedding due to their much shorter gaur coat.
