Cat litter/tray recommendations

Hi all. I'm looking for some advice as I currently have a very pongy litter tray. I empty solids as I see them and change the whole lot every day. The trouble is the room it's in still has that ammonia smell. Two cats share it though its not used exclusively as they do use the garden during the day.

Im going to buy a new tray as I think the smell has seeped into the plastic (I wash it our properly every week). Any recommendations as to a good odour free tray and litter (usually use catsan).

Thank you

My trays are very basic plastic ones but deep and I keep them deep filled as this seems to help. Litter is Fuller's earth which I've found better smell wise than anything else I've tried, although it's heavy so makes my bin bags heavy!

I use under bed storage boxes for my 2. Means i can fill them really deep and they can cover anything really well! I use cats best and don't get any smell at all. I checked (when we were allowed people in) and no one said they could smell anything.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I appreciate you taking the time to reply.

I’m a big fan of the covered litter tray. Definitely minimises the smell.

I recommend cats best litter. Natural and flushable - very easy.

I am a big fan of clumping litter as feel that you are scooping out the urine 2 times every day so that horrible ammonia smell doesn't build up. A big open tray is also better as you can clean it easily and cats prefer. I find the covered ones tend to intensify any bad smells as no air and if car pees on the sides it really stinks. I use a cat litter deodorizer powder on top of my litter too which smells like baby powder each time I scoop out.

Thank you, some definate tips to try. We've always had a covered tray (minus the flap as big boy cat can't figure it out) and I do clean the top bit regularly. This week has been better, I've added much more litter than usual as suggested by an earlier poster and I've not smelt it yet. However I do think a change of litter is in order. I may try a few as an experiment to see which works best.

We have a litter robot. It’s spendy at the outlay but it’s paid for itself over and over with not having to scoop the poop. We have 4 cats and one robot. They always have a clean litter to use.

A litter robot? I am intrigued...

So am I @LongPauseNoAnswer. What brand / make / what is it’s name so I can hunt it down?!

thecatneuterer · 06/02/2021 19:12

I use wood pellets. They don't smell at all. A huge pack from Pets at Home costs £7 and, if you only have one cat, would probably last at least a couple of months.

Changi · 06/02/2021 19:52

Can you get them to go outside at night?

SnowmanDrinkingSnowballs · 06/02/2021 19:53

I second using wood pellets (not straw pellets) they are very absorbent and once I’ve emptied the tray there is no smell. I only change it every 3 days and it only smells when very warm in summer.

Toilenstripes · 06/02/2021 19:56

I would recommend a raw diet. It’s more expensive but their poos will be half of what they were and they won’t stink. Give PurrForm a try. It’s made a huge difference in my and my cats quality of life.

SciFiScream · 06/02/2021 20:18

If PP who flush cat litter are in the UK you mustn't do this. Only pee, poo and paper can't go down our loos

In addition cat poo has a parasite that can't be dealt with and you could infect someone/contaminate the environment.

Please don't do it.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 07/02/2021 10:16

Their poos aren't such an issue as they get dealt with quickly although I have been looking at a raw diet so will do some more reading. They're not really outdoor cats. They like to sit in the garden sometimes if the weather permits but they like their home comforts and I'm happy with this arrangement. I'm definately checking out the robot though and have two new litter types on order.

We use the Iris 2in1 from Pets Planet with wood pellets from B&M. 30L bag for £6. You need a puppy pad in the lower tray as the pee goes straight through the grill. We change that daily and remove solids as soon as they've been done.

MyShrivelledGnarlyFinger · 08/02/2021 17:00

We use Ever Clean cat litter it clumps and is really good.

Hi, I just wanted to return to this thread to report that I have had much success with a new, large, unlidded litter tray and cats best original clumping litter. The tray is in regular use and there is no significant whiff!! The litter lasts ages (even with two cats) and I'm very chuffed.
