Long claws

My old cat has very long claws , is there anything I can do or is it the vets? They were not very keen to see her if she’s not in pain, which she does not seem to be ,,

I normally get my cats claws trimmed regularly at the vets. However they aren’t doing this at the moment (emergencies only) so I bought a pair of cat claw clipping scissors from eBay and they were here in 2 days. I wait until my cat is lying asleep and give her some fuss and managed to do a couple each time with no fuss.

I might try that thanks !

I periodically had to trim my old boy's claws after he turned 19 and became much less adept at managing them himself. I bought clippers and used to do it when he was dozing. Could generally manage a couple of paws before he woke and objected.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/01/2021 18:14

I do mine myself. But it does depend on the cat!

Plump82 · 26/01/2021 19:32

I can cut our boy cats claws no problem. He's daft as a brush though and as long as he's stroked through out then he's fine. Our girl on the other hand isn't so daft and unfortunately her claws despite being tiny are like needles! She enjoys jumping on your back which is agony so I really need to keep on top of hers. I can only do 1 at a time and feel its a never ending circle!

I do my ancient cats claws myself with special claw clippers. You only need to nip the points off. Dont go too low. I do a paw a day or she gets cross.

Jojoanna · 27/01/2021 08:24

Any particular clippers I should buy ?

I use the ones that look like a pair of pliers (similar to these ones on the link below from Amazon) - I got mine from lical petshop. Easy to use and effective.

Several shredded arms later, it’s the vets every time now. Ours has a care package that includes clipping.

DenisetheMenace · 27/01/2021 10:50

(They do the Guinea pig too)

BigWoollyJumpers · 27/01/2021 13:36

I've always clipped our cats (and Guinea's) claws myself. I just use standard human nail clippers, no problem. Currently using ones we got in xmas crackers !!

DeusEx · 01/02/2021 17:09

I clip at home. It is a two person job I find: one to hold the cat (including holding in one hand the two back paws while doing the front so that they can’t be used to escape / scratch) and one person to do the clipping. Lots of treats afterwards. Despite doing it for years one of our cats still acts like we’re trying to massacre her every time.

Do look on YouTube for tips. One top tip our vet gave us was that when you gently press the cat’s toe pad, the claw will automatically extend - makes it much easier to clip. Make sure not to clip into or too near the pink centre - that would hurt.

Thank you , we have tried but we need to hold her head because she keeps biting ,, it’s very traumatic my poor girl

I do my old girls she wouldn’t tolerate the vets. Hers do curl round. We just wrap her into a towel and hold then clip. She doesn’t like it but you can see how much happier she is afterwards. We have basic clippers nothing fancy as you don’t take much off.

I tried that, with the piggies. Read up that as long as you cut the transparent bit and avoid the brown/black, it’ll be good.
Did that, blood spurted forth. Accused of being an attempted murderer by the kids, it’s still the vets for me Grin

So managed to do 1 claw ,, as soon as I clipped it the whole claw came out ,, she was very cross , might wait to do another one
