Elderly cat falling over

Our dear cat is 16. He has been very spritely catching mice and even a squirrel until about a month ago. Recently, he has starting falling over or falling off things for no apparent reasons (often from a height, which is really worrying) and makes a screaming sound. Sometimes he becomes contorted into strange shapes and shakes as if he is having a fit or rolls off the sofa. Afterwards, he becomes frozen in 1 position for a few minutes but eventually walks off as if nothing has happened and can still jump high up. This is happening about 5/6 times a day. Just now, he started shaking uncontrollably on an arm chair with his paws in the air and his eyes went blank and white. He was unresponsive and I thought I had lost him. Yet he seems back to normal now.

I have taken him to the vets twice in the last fortnight. He has had blood tests. They say he is healthy for his age. His kidneys are at the high end of normal. They vet says they can't find anything medically wrong with him, apart from a touch of arthritis and just to keep an eye. I am really worried about my cat and don't want him to suffer. Has anyone experienced this with their cat? Thank you.

You must be worried sick.

We have a senior cat about the same age so I understand. Take him to the vet ASAP, it sound neurological, sorry I have no experience or qualifications, it’s just what I would do 😿

Your vet has probably checked this but we had this with one of ours and it was a chest infection. One antibiotic injection and she was fine despite looking very dramatic.

It could be one of many things. Maybe get a 2nd opinion? I hope he's ok.

Thanks for your replies. I took him to the vet. The vet just said he's an elderly cat and to keep an eye. Poor thing is still falling over a lot.

It sounds like a fit to me definitely. What is causing it is another matter. I'd be inclined towards a 2nd opinion.
If you have insurance maybe see an animal neurologist.
Cats can have pills for epilepsy.

Thanks interesting to know. I think we need to do something otherwise the poor cat is going to get seriously injured falling from table tops and chairs. As time has gone on I do think he is having some kind of fit, so epilepsy could well be the reason.
