Cat wants to be feral

After losing a beloved boy cat last winter, we adopted two 6 month old girls in the spring. I have a 7 yr old female who likes no one, is out all summer and asleep in a quiet space all winter. They all settled with a few spats here and there but nothing major, and we kept the kits in for several months what with lockdown and being so little.

Once we let them out, one basically stopped coming home really quickly and was last spotted in September. I knew she was alive but couldn't find her anywhere. We've tried all the usuals but nothing apart from a couple of possible garden sightings. Until tonight, when next door but one checked the cat in their bed wasn't her, and it was! She has obvs been fed, she's healthy, with a thick winter coat.

She's been fed, flea'd and put in the kitchen with her bed but has been lunging for the cat flap (locked) and growling at old girl who I now think might have been chasing her away. She's very nervy but I think that's understandable after so long away.

Sorry that's long. Feliway friends ordered, and will start slow reintroduction tomorrow, but I'm concerned that she will just walk as soon as she can. Any ideas?

Would she prefer a warm cosy bed in a shed or garage with a cat flap. We’ve had two cats that spent a significant part of the day and all night in the garage.
Food, water, litter tray, cat flap, warm boiler, pop back in the house a few times a day make sure the humans are still around and ask for more food, then back out to garage

I don't think she wants to be feral.

She was in your neighbour's bed, a feral cat wouldn't do that.

If your older cat is chasing her off, could your neighbours take her in?

They have a massive boy cat who isn't keen on her. There's an older lady about ten doors up who feeds lots of the local cats as she loves them in the garden so I suspect she's been over there a lot. I might go chat to her.

We have a large garden and a summer house, which we could definitely give her access to. I've been leaving food out but there are so many cats locally I've no idea if she's been managing to get any of it.

I'll try keeping her in as long as we can and see if I can't dispel the tension somehow. Other kitten was so pleased to see her!
