Cat coming home this week!

Hey everyone,

I had a previous thread on indoor/outdoor cats. I went to the cat rescue and the cat I have chosen is actually an indoor cat. He is gorgeous! I am collecting him on Wednesday. I just wanted to check I have everything ready for him? This is what I have so far:

  • Carrier with blanket inside
  • Cat bed (I expect this will be ignored)
  • Selection of toys
  • Scratching post
  • Brush
  • Treats
  • Wet & dry food (+ bowls)
  • Litter tray, scoop & litter
  • Collar & ID (just encase he escapes)

Am I missing anything?

I'd ditch the collar
Cat tree?
Cardboard box (good alternative to a cat bed)
I have a silicone mat that the cat bowls sit on to stop food getting flicked on the floor

Toddlerteaplease · 10/01/2021 09:19

I've got a honeycomb mat that sits under the litter tray and cuts down tracking. Don't forget the litter tray rules when you get him! Photos are compulsory.

DenisetheMenace · 10/01/2021 09:21

I’d book him in for microchipping.

KatherineJaneway · 10/01/2021 09:29

Congratulations!

Remember to put his water bowl away from his food bowl. Also check what food they have been feeding and buy the same. This is so you can transition him to the food you want him on but it won't be a huge change for his system in the meantime.

Have you a photo of him? 😺

Chemenger · 10/01/2021 09:31

Forget the collar, the rescue should have microchipped him.

Pandabuzz · 10/01/2021 10:04

Yes he has been microchipped, thanks for the advice on the collar.
I’ve got the dry food the rescue give him. They say they give them whatever wet food they have available so I’ve got a couple of brands in to see if he has a preference,
Here he is. 😊

Aww he is lovely! I second a cat tree, they like higher up places to sit as they feel safer and like to have a decent view of their kingdom 😂 we got a relatively inexpensive one from lidl during their big pet event and have two very happy cats now!

Chemenger · 10/01/2021 10:22

He is absolutely gorgeous. You are going to be covered in fluff, buy sticky rollers.

Chemenger · 10/01/2021 10:24

Make sure your scratching post is the tallest one you can find. They love to really stretch when they scratch. Reward with Dreamies when they use it the first few times.

dementedpixie · 10/01/2021 10:27

I have this one. It's tall enough to stretch full length up it

That’s the one we have too! It’s been well used by a very long young male foster, who could reach the top and now by a very petite female foster who likes to climb it and perch precariously on the top.

@Chemenger very nimble cat!
Mine looks a bit worse for wear in the middle section as they've scratched it so much. Might need replacing soon

ivfbeenbusy · 10/01/2021 10:44

Ah he looks lovely 😻😻😻😻

Looks pretty big though so I'd look for a fairly big and sturdy cat tree

Beamur · 10/01/2021 10:49

Fluffy!
One of mine is semi long haired. Needs brushing a few times a week but it's not onerous.
Is he used to being brushed?
Cat trees are good as they also provide other angles to scratch.
I have a tall pole and a tree, which I've put by windows so they can perch and look out. All of my cats can go out, but my youngest two prefer to be indoors but like to look out.

Q1w2e3 · 10/01/2021 11:06

I have no advice but just wanted to say congratulations and he’s gorgeous!

KatherineJaneway · 10/01/2021 11:29

He is SO beautiful!

Toddlerteaplease · 10/01/2021 11:34

Oh he is a beaut. For long hair you will need; a metal comb and a kids tangle teaser. Ask the rescue if they can give him a hygiene trim round his back end. And keep his bloomers short. Thinning scissors are less risky than normal scissors for a quick trim. I get my long haired girl professionally groomed every few months just to keep on top of the hits she hates having brushed.

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/01/2021 12:00

We had the extra tall post for the Bengal. We tried the extra wide one once and he did a wee on dhs side of the bed so we took it back and pets at home were very nice about it.

He is beautiful. He’ll be happy to be out of the rescue.

Beamur · 10/01/2021 13:52

I use 2 brushes, one to actually brush and the other one for cat to chew and rub face against! She really enjoys being groomed, but you have to work up to it really slowly if yours isn't used to it. I started by just letting her smell the brush and left it on the floor. Then one brush plus Dreamies. Then 2, etc and stopping as soon as she was fed up.

violetbunny · 11/01/2021 07:12

I'd ask when he last had flea & worm treatments, even if he's indoor only he may have picked things up from other cats. When I first adopted my two I took them into the vet for a general check over and they were given a flea and worm treatment then.
