Cat fans - does your cat do this?

Today my cat wandered to the corner of the living room and stood, staring at the wall.

Does yours do that?

Back story. I had two litter brothers 15 years. They were not kittens when I got them but still young.

Last October I was worried about one of them, he was eating less (leaving food in his bowl, must unlike him but I knew he went elsewhere for food) and behaving oddly (staring at the corner of the room). I looked at him closely and realised he had lost weight (fluffy so difficult to tell) and immediately made an appointment at the vets in two days time, following Monday.

I also got the litter tray out (kept him in to keep an eye on him 24/7 over weekend) and was horrified on Saturday morning to see he could not poo, he struggled but nothing came out.

Took him to emergency vet who gave him stuff to make him poo. Sunday came, still couldn't poo, took him back. Vet sedated and found mass blocking anus. He was put down at the Monday appointment.

Thing is, remaining brother is eating less this week, staring at corner today, and was unsettled/crying to me earlier today. I will make vet appointment Monday to have him checked and have brought cat litter tray out, will keep him indoors, and check he can poo and wee.

I am scared he has whatever his brother had. If he does, I will let him go Sad.

I want to be wrong.

Oh my goodness I am so sorry. I wonder if he is grieving? Our boy cat absolutely picks up on feelings and when I am sick or upset he stays close to me

Maybe ask to get this moved to the “litter tray” board OP, lots of people knowledgeable about cat behaviour there Good luck.

He's pining because he doesn't understand where his pal has gone. He may start nocturnal yowling. Extra cuddles required. Fingers crossed.

Elderly cats sometimes get dementia, as humans do. Our old girl exhibits some very odd behaviour at times.

Thanks for response.

No, highly unlikely. Brother died in October and surviving brother has been very happy to be the top cat in the house. They were typical siblings, sleeping together one moment and ambushing each other the next.

I had always assumed that a cat needed another cat 'companion' to play with/for company. Many years ago when I got my first cat I adopted another to join her after a year. Big mistake, she hated the rivalry of another animal in the house. This was why (years after my first two cats had passed) I got two litter brothers, I thought they would get on better.

I have realised that most cats like to be the alpha animal in a household and if there are other animals it can be stressful if they have to fight each other for top cat position.

Update:

Took cat to vet to have thorough health check and all is well, vet said there were no causes for concern and he was looking well for his age. Smile. As he still has not done a poo in the litter tray (his wees are fine) I will keep him in until he does.

Glad that I am over cautious about this, its just that I didn't spot it with his brother back in October until by chance I looked outside and saw his distress and inability to poo. By then it was too late.

My precious boy should have many more happy years ahead; my previous two cats lived to 20 and 21.

One of my cats had a condition called megacolon. It was very distressing for him and for me. It's a serious problem, but can be mostly managed. Your vet would know immediately, so I'd say your fella will be fine. Sorry for your loss Flowers

One of my cats is a bit odd. She suffers from hyperesthesia so will go on mad runabouts and then groom her back end like she's allergic to her own rump. But she also "goes gargoyle" as I call it. She doesn't stare at a wall but she will go into a trance and stare off into the distance while her little body sways on the spot. It's very odd and she can stay like that for a couple of minutes if not interrupted.

She also has wobbly eyeballs (nystagmus) and the occasional asthma attack. I don't think she's got the best genes.

My cat will suddenly become transfixed by a wall for no apparent reason, but it usually turns out to be a shadow or a tiny bug (fruit fly for e.g.) which has caught his eye!

ketosavedmylife · 12/01/2021 08:50

Thanks @Want2beme, @HelpMeh and @HunkyPunk for your replies. Jumps did a poo this morning in litter tray! Yay! He can go outside again Smile.

So, its a thing cats do, staring in corners. I would love to know what goes on in his little cat brain, I really would. What does he think about the humans who look after him? If he could talk, what would he say?

I always imagine Hunkycat in a permanent state of
'Hmm wtf? fgs...Hmm'
with the humans in his house Grin

Btw, so pleased that your cat is well, op Smile

GeidiPrimes · 12/01/2021 09:38

I'm glad your cat's OK. I have a cat who wanders the house staring and wailing into corners too.

It's so inexplicable, isn't it? I have a vase of imitation winter flowers that sits by the fireplace. Jumps likes to stand and watch it (studies it carefully), sometimes sniffing the 'flowers'.

Then, despite the fact that he has some lovely, soft, comfortable blankets to lie on in living room, goes to the cardboard box by the front door (delivered in error before christmas, still awaiting pickup) and sits on that. WTF indeed Grin.
