Indoor Cat and Litter Tray

Have just rehomed a dcat who is an indoor cat. Plan to keep her inside until the weather breaks and patio door is left open so she can begin to explore the outside world in her own time.

In the meantime she’ll be reliant on a cat litter tray - she has access to two. I’m using Catsan at the moment but it’s not very environmentally friendly but hear mixed ratings for wood pellets.

Also with Catsan the litter doesn’t clump together so lifting a clump of soiled litter out not possible. How often should I replace the whole contents of the tray?

She is short haired. I understand this makes a difference when selecting a litter type.

Photo to follow when she makes an appearance.

Thanks in advance.

I have two indoor cats. Get clumping. It's so much easier. I use intersand or Tigrino (much cheaper) it lasts ages. I fully change it once a month.

Oki plus is a great clumping litter you can flush
And a hooded litter tray with a flap

Wood or paper litters are the most eco friendly. Clay based litters like cats an have significant ecological impact and don't degrade.

I use wood pellets - change 1-2x weekly

You can get eco clumping litters too. I used cats best smart pellets and worlds best when mine used it a lot. I currently have ultra clumping clay stuff as they only use it occasionally now and clay stuff is cheaper

I hate clumping litter. I find it sticks to the tray (vom).

I scoop the poops as they appear, shake the trays every time, and refresh the whole litter every 3 days.

dementedpixie · 29/12/2020 21:55

Maybe you don't put a deep enough layer if it is sticking to the bottom. Clumping means cleaning the whole thing out less often

MummytoCSJH · 29/12/2020 21:56

I use wood pellets as I find they help a lot with the smell. I usually empty completely every 2-3 days depending how full it is. I have 4 cats though and lots of trays, sometimes they spend more time in certain areas so a certain tray is worse.

Non-clay clumping works well and doesn’t stick like cement Grin
Cat’s Best is brilliant. You need to put 2-3” in initially, but then it only needs an occasional top-up to last for weeks; the wee clumps and poos can be flushed (clumps need to be squashed) and when the whole lot goes over - it starts to smell of ammonia eventually - the remains can go in the compost bin.
It’s not cheap but it is very economical.

(I use Original, with the red band)

We’ve just started to use EverClean extra strong clumping cat litter unscented and it is fab. Clumps brilliantly, no odour and very little dust.

Cats best original was terrible for tracking through the house. We used the smart pellets as they tracked less

It does track a bit but I got some grooved mats that tuck under the front (tray is lidded so they have to go out that way) & very little escapes. Having tried various other kinds I’m happiest with the Original Smile
Fluffycloudland77 · 29/12/2020 23:13

Use something small grained so it’s soft on their paws.

Thanks all. It is trial and error. Will get small bags of different types and see what works for dc and the environment.
