Does your cat talk to you?

Just that really, do you get much 'chat' from your cat. Our 8 month old ginger male named Chitten talks back to me all the time. It really is like dealing with a moody teenager. When I tell him off for complaining he walks off with a grunt!

Yes, all the time! They both have different noises which tell us what we want. They're so vocal and tend to reply if i make similar noises to them!

Lindy2 · 27/12/2020 18:39

Yes Roxie likes to chat.

She, rather annoyingly, will wake me most nights to say hello. During the night she meows much more quietly than during the day. It's her version of a whisper.

boredinthouse · 27/12/2020 18:41

Only when she's hungry, which is all the time anyway.

Lindy2 · 27/12/2020 18:41

I did read that cats don't really meow much at other cats. It is almost all just for the benefit of their humans.

Cleverpolly3 · 27/12/2020 18:41

All three of my girls do.

The middle one -4 - and the youngest one -6 months - are especially noisy and have a range of different sounds it’s very funny
My old girl aged 13 is much quieter except when a tin of tuna is opened then she makes a right racket

TodgerStrunk · 27/12/2020 18:42

Yup. One is very vocal, wants congratulations on surviving every trip to the Great Outside. Indeed, sometime even for surviving the trip upstairs. He does like to comment on his food bowl and the weather. He also likes to howl in the porch as that means someone opens the front door - he doesn't realise that's because he's set the camera off.

His sister just says "mew" once, almost silently, and waits for DH to jump up and follow her to whatever the issue is.

Em3978 · 27/12/2020 19:06

Both of ours are very communicative. Girlcat is the loudest though. She has a shout/chat/answer for everything, and 'swears' at us when we catch her stealing her brother's food.
Boycat is less vocal (he can't get a word in edgeways with his sister!) but does happy little 'thank yous' when you let him in from outside and 'quacks' when he's grumpy! He's also good at non verbal communication; will show us what he wants when we ask him. He's quitely quite clever in his own little way.

Em3978 · 27/12/2020 19:07

Both ours are nearly 15 and ginger. Smile

Seafog · 27/12/2020 19:08

They both chat to us, asking for play, or treats, or to open the window, or to get them more water...it never ends!

IRememberSoIDo · 27/12/2020 19:11

Yes. One has a miaow that would slice your head in two it's so loud. He narrates every moment of the day. You'd never ever be lonely (or have any peace) with him. His brother is quieter but does talk a good bit but it sounds really funny as his miaow is much quieter so he sounds hilarious in comparison. The loud one has a special miaow for me that sounds like he's trying to say "mom". Dh thinks that's the funniest and uses it to get out of having to give him his 295th dinner of the day or let him out "coz he wants his mommy" 🙈

Ifailed · 27/12/2020 19:13

Of course they can't! They have a brain the size of a walnut, even a human child take about 12 months to start talking.

wizzbangfizz · 27/12/2020 19:15

Yes when our cat comes through the cat flap he meows loudly and continually until one of us meows back 😂

LongPauseNoAnswer · 27/12/2020 19:16

Yes. I have 4 and they talk to me in different ways about different things. One wants just conversion, nothing in particular. 2 ask when they want food or scratches. The 4th when he wants to be picked up or given a treat Grin they’re so much fun.

WirKindervomBahnhofZoo · 27/12/2020 19:18

@wizzbangfizz

Yes when our cat comes through the cat flap he meows loudly and continually until one of us meows back 😂

Exactly this. He needs to make sure we know he has returned!

Drogonssmile · 27/12/2020 19:19

Yes we have a range of vocals from DCat. Love having a conversation with her 😸

Drogonssmile · 27/12/2020 19:21

She also does enormous huffy sighs and nose puffs when shes annoyed. 😤

sweetkitty · 27/12/2020 19:23

Ginger boy cat definitely the chattiest here, never stops miaowing at you about something. Black boy cat usually just miaows his arrival into a room or if he’s stuck in or out somewhere. Tortie girl the quietest- she answers her name all the time though

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/12/2020 19:24

All three of them, yes, they talk.

bravotango · 27/12/2020 19:26

Another one with a very vocal ginger boy! Aged 13. Got him as a timid rescue in 2019...not so timid now Grin

Weedsnseeds1 · 27/12/2020 19:26

Mine does. I have a door at the bottom of the stairs, he bursts through with a "DaDaaa" noise, vogues for a moment, then struts into the room.
He "AckAck" s backward and forward with me and does a"Phhhuuut" when exasperated

KirstenBlest · 27/12/2020 19:26

Yes. He announces his presence and starts nagging. If I ignore him he huffs and puffs. If that doesn't work he gets physical.
Moody teenager sums him up.

Weedsnseeds1 · 27/12/2020 19:28

He's also developed a very irritating lockdown habit of patting me every time he wants something, with increasing levels of casual violence, depending how quickly I react...

hartof · 27/12/2020 19:36

My 3 year old cat doesn't but the 4 month old kitten does. He's a big softie follows us round and loves a cuddle. If he can't find us he walks round saying hello but it sounds more like "ewwo" he's so cute 😻

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/12/2020 19:46

Yes he did, he had a loud sniff he did when vexed & a flick of the tail that meant fuck you mommy.

PrincessNutNuts · 27/12/2020 20:03

One of mine considers it a failure on all our parts if she is forced to vocalise her displeasure. Stalking into a room and raising an eyebrow should be enough to summon a human, surely?

She does happy chirpy hellos and joyful playing noises and a sound best translated as "hurry the fuck UPPPPP"

The other one keeps up a running commentary that often sounds like grumbling and swearing and replies if you ask questions which the children love.

They both ack-ack-ack if there's a bird.
