Cat being funny with food

Our normally very greedy cat has been leaving some of her wet food over the weekend. Maybe leaving about 1/5 instead of licking the dish clean. She’s eating biscuits, and begging for treats, behaving exactly as normal otherwise.

Any thoughts? Last time she went off her food she needed major dental work costing a fortune, but I’m certain she wouldn’t be chomping up biscuits if her teeth hurt? She hates going to the vet and gets really distressed. What would you do?

Its called being a cat as they can be fickle creatures. Mine don't clear the bowl at once and go back and forth to it through the day as they like to graze

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/12/2020 15:57

When did the vet last see her?.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/12/2020 17:04

@dementedpixie she does usually wolf the wet food, grazes on dry.

@Fluffycloudland77 not since the beginning of the year for annual checkup and jabs. She must be due at the end of Jan/beginning of Feb, all okay last time.

Just updating to say she has pretty much licked her dinner plate clean. DP has just told me there were a load of fireworks just before he fed her last night - I was in the bath and didn’t realise - so possibly she is just a bit off her stott with that.

We’ll keep an eye on her, but today she has had a nice sleep in our bed, been out, spent time destroying a stuffed mouse my friend knitted for her, and is now snoozing on my heated throw, so seems pretty normal.

That all sounds good! Glad she's back to normal. Nice pic of the bowls, but where's the cat? You know the rules!

HunkyPunk · 20/12/2020 19:42

Haha! X post! She's gorgeous Smile

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/12/2020 22:17

She’ll never now how close she came to being whipped off to the vet 😃

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/12/2020 23:03

@HunkyPunk she’s a wee monkey, but a very pretty one!

@fluffycloudland77 I’ll keep an eye on her. It’s really cold here - Scotland - so she is going out less and probably burning off a lot less calories. The state of the poor mouse though, there is no chance she had sore teeth while she was in amongst him earlier! My friend put catnip in him and she actually ripped the wrapping paper off to get into the package under the tree. (Before she pulled the tree over...)

Just coming back to this to say I noticed late last night that she seems a bit stiff/hobbly on her back left leg, which is possibly impacting her sitting down to eat. So I rang the vet this morning and she is going in on Wednesday. However she has since raced up and down the garden, and eaten 95% of her breakfast, so...

DP held her while I felt every bit of the leg and she didn’t cry out or anything. Paw looks fine. God, I wish she could talk. I’m worried about cost as DP has been made redundant. Thank goodness we have insurance.hopefully I am worrying over nothing.

I dashed to the vets at closing time with mine once as he’d come in nearly unable to weightbear and crying in pain. Vet stayed late and everything and he not only walked normally but stood on his hind legs to reach the table. They gave me painkillers for him, when we got home he still couldn’t weight bear.

The next morning he shot out of the bedroom as dh came out the dressing room, saw dh and had a look of “oh shit” and limped off.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/12/2020 17:41

OMG @Fluffycloudland77I - what a monkey!

I’m going to keep an eye on her and see where we are on Wednesday morning. I feel happier that we have the appointment and can cancel rather than not have it, and it’s not til 5.30. She was horsing into biscuits half an hour ago as normal, then stood meercat style to see if she could get me to shift off the heated throw straight afterwards.

My guess is she landed awkwardly when she jumped off the bed during Saturday’s fireworks. She’s only six so I don’t think it is likely to be arthritis (especially as it’s so sudden) and there’s absolutely no chance the leg is broken. The most I could tell the vet’s reception was she was walking “a bit funny”.

Just updating to say the vet said she has a dodgy knee, likeiy as a result of a fall/awkward landing, and also needs to lose weight. We have metacam for a week, and he’s happy just to see her in January when her jabs are due. The metacam seems to be making her quite sleepy - or maybe she instinctively knows she needs to rest? - but otherwise is fine.

Well that’s not awful news.
