Cat Sneezing

My 15 year old boy has started sneezing a lot!
Took him to the vets about 3 weeks ago, his chest was clear no temperature. Vet gave him anti inflammatory liquid to take but that hasn't really done anything!
Noticed that it's worse after he's eaten so changed his cat food and he seemed better for a couple of days but now he's worse than ever!
Last night he started and I thought he wasn't going to stop!

He's back at the vets tomorrow, I've moved anything smelly, any ideas anyone what's causing it?

Here he is the poor fella! I have told him that cushion won't help but he's not listening! 😄

He could have a foreign body like a blade of grass stuck up there.

FestiveChristmasLights · 15/12/2020 20:28

He’s very cute. 😻

As above, cats do get blades of grass stuck up their noses sometimes (one of mine had two operations for it). Otherwise cat flu is a possibility although I think you would see weepy eyes and it would probably be on its way out by now.

What does he eat? Dusty food? Allergy to plastic bowls?

Isolatedizzy · 15/12/2020 21:29

He eats absolutely anything he can get his hands on! 🤣

It is his wet cat food - originally Felix as good as it gets and currently the Applaws sachets because I'm feeling sorry for him that seem to be causing the issues!

We do joke that he inhales his dry biscuits but I hope he actually hasn't!

I have noticed tonight that one eye is quite weepy and he has some dried muck on his little muzzle!

Hope the vet sorts him out tomorrow! He's such a smasher, I hate it when he's not 100%! ☹️

He has steroids and the cat equivalent of Sudafed! If he's no better by new year then it's X Rays, nose wash and his teeth sorted!

Poor fella! ☹️

Isolatedizzy · 18/12/2020 17:58

Still no better! This is really frustrating! How long does it take for the steroids to kick in? Does anyone know please?

Have they tested for cat flu? My kitten was vaccinated but still got it, sneezing all the time. Worth checking.

Hamstertrousers · 24/12/2020 16:48

I have two cat flu carriers here! Also both vaccinated. They’re prone to (very minor) relapses and often sneeze, otherwise they’re completely fine. As long as he is otherwise well (no eye gunk, eating normally, seems her usual self) I wouldn’t worry. Cats can catch colds just like us.

Isolatedizzy · 26/12/2020 09:14

We stopped the cat Sudafed as that seemed to irritate his nose and he was even worse! The steroids seem to be working but he still has the odd sneezing fit! It's really distressing!
I think he'll be in for tests after Christmas ☹️

He's booked in tomorrow for a nose flush, a look at his teeth, maybe X ray & swob!
Please keep everything crossed for him please everyone!

He's been doing a jigsaw tonight to take his mind off things! ☹️

Are his eyes ok? Not sticking closed?

Isolatedizzy · 05/01/2021 00:02

No, his eye's are fine. One gets a little weepy after a sneezing fit!

OP posts:
Svalberg · 05/01/2021 02:05

Fingers crossed then, could be blocked sinuses

Clarich007 · 05/01/2021 15:23

How's your lovely boy today ?

Isolatedizzy · 05/01/2021 21:20

He's fine! Looks wired his pupils are huge!

They flushed his nose with salt water, nothing came out, nothing on his soft pallet, they did an x ray that showed he had more soft tissue on one side than the other but she said without further investigation it would be impossible to tell what that was and it could just be where it was inflamed, irritated.

They couldn't see any problems with his teeth that looked bad enough to cause the sneezing, but gave they them a scrape and a clean so that's a good thing.

His ears were abit mucky so he has drops for those for a week and took swobs for cat flu and a whole host of other things but they won't be back for 10 days or so!

So all in all £750 lighter and not really any the wiser but the good news is he hasn't sneezed yet since he's been home!

At least I know there's nothing stuck up his nose or anything!

He's been treated to some prawns since he got home & lots of cuddles! He's the best boy, I've been so worried about him today!

OP posts:
Theunamedcat · 05/01/2021 21:30

My neighbours cat had this then one night he sneezed by her and she saw something one blade of grass and he has been fine ever since

Potentially he had something stuck and dislodged it but the lining of his nose was irritated enough to continue the sneezing

Is he an outdoor cat? Has someone put down pepper to deter him?

Isolatedizzy · 05/01/2021 21:50

He does go out but not far and not for long, he used to but as he gets older he prefers his home comforts!

I guess that's a possibility, it's a wait and see game now.

OP posts:
Isolatedizzy · 07/01/2021 13:34

Still no sneezing fits! The odd sneeze but nothing like before so it appears that the nose flush or the teeth clean has done the trick!

Hooray!

OP posts:
EachandEveryone · 07/01/2021 14:01

Thank goodness for that. Mine started sneezing last night I thought she would never stop as well. Strange.

Isolatedizzy · 09/01/2021 20:16

He's been abit more snufffly today and looked like he was going to start sneezing but DH said no to him very sternly and he stopped! 🤣

I'm at a loss tbh! ☹️

OP posts:
Isolatedizzy · 14/01/2021 13:17

The vet phoned today, he tested positive for one of the swobs!
I pick up some antibiotics for him tomorrow, has to be a certain one to treat whatever it is so they have ordered some!

I am so relieved - was starting to think it was something more sinister!

I thought I'd update just incase it helps anyone else in the future!

OP posts:
Svalberg · 14/01/2021 23:36

It's always better to have a positive test than for everything to be inconclusive - fingers crossed!

Isolatedizzy · 01/02/2021 20:26

We're 2 weeks in to the antibiotics and the sneezing is back! ☹️
