Cat going toilet on bed

Does anyone have any tips to help us stop a 5-month old kitten going the toilet on a bed? He uses the litter tray downstairs no problem but he went the toilet on a bed about a month ago and it’s obviously formed a habit for him as any chance he gets he does it again.

Charity we adopted him from says hopefully he will grow out of it and to keep him out of the bedroom - which isn’t ideal and sometimes the door gets left open accidentally despite best efforts.

He’s been the vet a couple of times recently for check ups/spaying etc and there’s nothing physically wrong with him

I’ve tried dettol spray/fabreze/Olbas oil and had a look online - but the deterrent sprays all have quite mixed reviews.

Any help or tips appreciated!

I’ve just seen there is a lengthy thread below on this subject with lots of good tips so will try those!

We had this problem when I was a child, the kitten always use to wee on my bed! My mum use to shake a plastic bottle with pebbles/gravel in it so every time he jumped up on the bed he got scared of the noise and ran out, and I do think it worked if I remember rightly. That sounds a lot meaner than it was, he was a well looked after and loved cat and lived to 18.

A litter tray upstairs as well as downstairs would be a good idea. Also look at the tips about types of litter. Are you using the same type as the charity you adopted him from? Cats often have a preference for the one they were raised with so it may be worth switching back if you've changed from his original litter. If you're going to let him outside eventually, though, that may resolve it for you as he may decide he prefers going outdoors.

Thanks for the replies. I’m not sure the issue is with the litter as he uses the litter tray downstairs with no issues. I’ll check with the charity about what litter they used though. I’ve given him a few cat treats today at various points throughout that day as read they don’t generally like to go the toilet where they eat! Will keep the door shut and just let him in for treats and see if that works!

Definitely put another tray upstairs, and make sure to clean up with an enzyme cleaner like Simple Solution.

And don't feed him cheap cat biscuits like Go Cat as it can play havoc with male cats' bladders (UTIs can make cats wee in the wrong places).

You should have two litter trays for him to choose from, ideally in different areas of the house. From the sounds of it he just has one?

How have you been cleaning the bed? I suspect the pee has seeped through into mattress which may mean it's impossible to truly get rid of the smell, sadly.
