Changing from 3 meals to 2

Kitty cats are just 6 months old. I think I have to change from 3 meals to 2. Currently they have dried food ar 7:15am and 6pm and wet food about midday. We have noticed that they seem hungrier first thing than later on.

Any tips on how best to do this. What to give when. I think they are a little young for all dried food and no wet.....or am I just being silly.

Their kittens still so you need to feed on demand till they are 1.

Cats should eat 4-6 very small meals a day.

You dont have to change anything. Mine are 4 years old and still like a bit of lunch on occasion

They should be fed on demand until they are at least 18 months. I would leave dry food out all the time (a great big bowl of it) and give wet food three or four times a day.

Why are you thinking of making them eat just dry? Why do you want to cut the number of meals? Both things sound like terrible ideas.

My very much adult cats may have only 2 meals of wet a day, but they have try down 24/7 which is regularly topped up. They prefer to graze and eat little & often, as that's more natural for them. I should point out that neither is overweight, despite being indoor only.

In the wild, cats get most of their liquid from their food. Though some domestic cats drink OK, it's always safer for them to have some wet food - especially males, as they have a tendency to urinary crystals.

Thanks guys. All the advice around is very confusing. The girl I got the cats from said she'd been advised no dry till 12 months. My vet said good quality dry food is fine for them and he would advise.
All the packaging says 2 meals by this age.....but I think they would rather 3 or 4 smaller ones.
I have one greedy cat that tries to eat it all and 1 grazer.....so I do try to watch and make sure she gets food too.

In the wild they’d have small meals regularly. Some dry, like go cat, have dyes banned in the us for being carcinogenic & cereals that pass straight through them.

A good quality wet is better for them but never buy the big packs, they’ll instantly go off it.

thecatneuterer · 14/12/2020 20:03

More smaller meals is always better for cats than fewer big ones - so I can't imagine why the packaging would say the opposit. Good quality dry (at least as expensive as Iams, and preferably something more like Applaws, Arden Grange etc) is fine, but I would never give a purely dry diet. Most cats prefer wet and it's hard for them to get enough moisture in their diet if it's just dry food. This is particularly important for male cats.

My cats would laugh at the idea of two meals a day Grin

The food is Lifelong Grainfree Food - kitten version (I think it's amazon own brand). And the wet is felix kitten- one pouch of the cheaper one and one pouch of the as good as it looks. - there aren't a lot of choices of wet kitten food in local shops. There is more at the pet shop but I didn't want to start them on something that's either hard to get or too expensive to continue with.
