6month kittens won't eat !

Evening all ! I have 2 kittens / sisters who are just so difficult to feed and it's totally stressing me out. They went off the wet food they came to me on , they've tried several others and don't seem to really like any of it ! They will graze on the dry go-cat I leave out , the wet food does get eaten over night but not as much as they should be having - maybe over 24hrs they'll eat 1 pouch of wet each . Vet says they are absolutely fine btw - what can I do??

Just to add they weigh 6lbs each

Can you switch to better quality dry and see if they'll eat enough of that for their age/weight?

dementedpixie · 10/12/2020 23:10

Go cat is a terrible dry food. I would phase in a new better dry food.
If the vet says they're fine then I would go by them

GiantKitten · 10/12/2020 23:16

I have 3 adult cats (one is 15lbs) and they only have 4 pouches of wet food a day between them. (Felix cheap basic pouches, fish kind, they love them! Not so keen on the meat ones. The box says they should be having 3-4 each Confused)

They always have biscuits available too.

Obv your cats are still growing, but still it sounds as if they are getting enough, assuming they’re energetic?

bodhi1982 · 11/12/2020 00:39

Yes both energetic ! What I meant to ask is for recommendations for a complete dry food for their age because they do seem to like the dry

Mine have this - it was recommended by the vet when I had first 2 female kittens neutered. They’re not “young” any more and now there’s a male too, but they all scoff them & are pretty healthy (touch wood).

I get the 10kg bags but you could start out with a small one, just in case they don’t like it. (The website is very useful website for things like flea drops too & they deliver quickly.)

Royal canin isn't that great either tbh. You should look at high meat with no grains. Mine like thrive and encore dry and they have 90% and 80% meat respectively

vanillandhoney · 11/12/2020 07:08

I would avoid Royal Canin like the plague tbh - it's full of fillers and really not very good quality despite the ridiculous price tag.

You want food with meat as the number one ingredient and ideally 80% meat or more. Thrive is good but there are plenty of others - sadly most aren't available in supermarkets but you can get it from Pets at Home or ZooPlus.

dementedpixie · 11/12/2020 07:42

Zooplus or amazon for mine. Think applaws is the same manufacturer as encore.

Prestel · 11/12/2020 08:15

One pouch of wet food sounds fine if they're also eating some dry food. As commented above, few cats eat the maximum recommended amounts, anyway. Also kittens eat a lot when they're growing a lot and less when they're not so their appetites do vary quite a lot compared to adult cats.
I agree that Go Cat isn't great as a main food. There are better ones widely available in supermarkets, like Iams. I wouldn't worry about grain-free, grain allergies in cats are extremely rare. Cats naturally chew on grass to aid digestion so grains and fillers aren't a problem, it's really the need for a good percentage of meat that you want to look for and just go for the highest meat content you can afford.
Make sure you introduce any new foods gradually.

JorisBonson · 11/12/2020 08:18

I agree with Thrive, much less crap than other brands.

Poorlykitten · 11/12/2020 08:19

Dry food is not great for cats in the long run. Can cause kidney problems. It’s not anything like their natural diet. I would try a combo of good quality wet and dry, sometimes I add chicken in to temp my fussy kitten. It’s often just trial and error as to what they will eat.

Clarich007 · 11/12/2020 08:30

Please don't feed Go cat it really is crap.
Mine have Encore or Thrive or Carnilove.Really high meat content and no fillers as far as I know.Tbe Encore pouches are good too, expensive but you know they are getting decent food.Good luck

Allergictoironing · 11/12/2020 08:41

My pair have 1.5 pouches a day between them, and otherwise have dry down all day plus water nearby. There's always a bit of the wet left behind (with all the tasty jelly licked off of course!) at every meal. If I offer them less, they still leave almost exactly the same amount behind. If I offer more, then there's more left.

Very healthy, great condition according to the vet.

bodhi1982 · 11/12/2020 09:46

Pets at home wouldn't sell me the Royal cabin one - said it has to be prescribed

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 11/12/2020 09:51

That's ok. Its full of crap anyway if you look at the ingredients

Allergictoironing · 11/12/2020 10:37

Most Royal Canin isn't on prescription - maybe that specific one is, but standard food from them isn't. Same with many other brands I'd guess, they will have their special prescription foods but most are sold anywhere that does that brand.

GiantKitten · 11/12/2020 12:51

“Vet Care Nutrition” is just a branding thing, isn’t it? I’ve certainly never needed a prescription for the neutered food.
Zooplus sell it and they don’t deal in prescription stuff at all; pet drugs online do, but always tell you in red when you need one, & this doesn’t.
And despite all the negativity about it from PPs on this thread, it has done my cats very well for 8 years - they love it, they’re happy to eat it (unlike some of the “better” food) and they’re very healthy on it.
Also their poo doesn’t stink Grin
