Cat ear abscess wound

One of my cats had an ear injury last night and then within a couple of hours it developed into an abscess the size of a golf ball. Drained the puss as much as I could and went to the vets first thing this morning.
They have given me 5 days of antibiotics and pain relief and said to keep cleaning the wound
The problem is, he has continued to scratch it all day and it’s now an open wound the size of a 5 pence piece. (When we came back from vets was a tiny hole, then a gash, now this due to scratching). I can’t keep a come of shame on him for more than a minute (although vet didn’t advise to use or not use)
I have just resorted to placing a sterile dressing over the ear, bandage and tape.
Any other advice would be appreciated as I don’t want him to keep opening the wound more and causing more damage

My cat when I was little had similar. Kept clawing at it and did some damage before my mum whisked her back to the vet and demanded a cove of shame.

Cone of shame.

Could you try an inflatable collar. It might be better tolerated than the cone of shame.. you can buy them online.

I hadn’t heard of these - will look into now. Thank you!

Come of shame doesn’t work as he removes within a minute unfortunately

Cone with something to tie it in place. sudocream works in clearing it up as well, believe it or not. My cat had an abscess that he scratched after it had been drained, so into cone, and was then dealing with two abscesses. I used sudocream in desperation when it wasn't clearing up, and it worked!

Madcats have gone through an unfortunate rough play/hunting phase this past month which resulted in girlcat getting bitten loads.

£160 worth of antibiotics (we had a jab good for a fortnight according to DH) and painkillers we are on the other side.

Can you trim DCat's claws? Scabs get itchy.

God luck!

My cat had an abcess on her face recently. She too fussed with it resulting in an open wound. A cone of shame or inflatable collar wouldn't work and would cause too much distress anyway so I just cleaned it regularly and used antiseptic powder that I got from a pet shop to ensure it stayed germ free. It healed up just fine

It will get wider and the hair around it will come away.

Keep washing with salt water. Once all th pus is out she should stop scratching.

If he's pulling the cone of shame off his head it needs to be tied a bit tighter. His neck is narrower than his skull so it should be tight enough that it won't go over his skull but not so tight as to cause discomfort
