Boring quick reminder to people about some of the extra hazards of the festive season when it comes to our furry overlords. Bit of a downer I know, but better than an emergency vet visit!

Poinsettias, mistletoe & ivy are all toxic to cats
Pine needles can cause stomach upset, and even perforated gut, as well as cuts to paws.
If your cat is a food thief remember onions, chocolate, sweeteners, some nuts and dried fruit (e.g. raisins) and grapes are toxic.
Tinsel/lametta can get wound round the gut. Look out for sparkly poo, or ones that look like a string of sausages (normal for mine, I have long hair! )

A very good reminder.
We unfortunately had a near-miss with our old cat who ate Christmas ribbon. And was very, very ill. We had a call on Hogmanay saying in the morning we'd have to make a decison on whether to let her go or continue with treatment. She made a miraculous recovery (the vet hospital couldn't believe it as all her organs shut down) but christmas ribbon was instantly banned and still is now we have our new cats.

I was going to mention string and ribbons too.
Also fairy lights - mine actually chewed through the wire when they were kittens but the lights were turned off at the time so nothing happened (other than the lights were unusable after, obviously). I would only use battery operated lights now with young cats especially.

Mine chewed through the lights yesterday. Not on a tree but they a manged to get in the box they were in. I plugged them in and they work so who knows what wire they ate!!

Our last cat was the most sensible cat I have met but she liked the lametta which was on the tree and would chew it so not was removed and never put back. Current feline is now bored with the tree, first couple of days baubles were batted off and the festive cat and sloth hunted down and taken to the hallway. No lametta or tinsel in our house. No festive plants either, I love poinsettias but I love my cat more.
