An actual litter tray question

Hello all

I'm in the process of adopting a new cat and it's the first time I'll have had a litter tray in years. I just wondered what others do about clearing out and what you do with the rubbish?

I will be clearing it out as I notice it's been used and had initially bought dog poo bags to empty these changes in to. That's going to end up with quite a lot of little bags and trips to the bin so I was wondering if I was missing something? How does everyone else do it?

(I realise disposing of down the toilet is a big no no and wouldn't have even thought of doing that anyway)

Many thanks in advance!

I try to minimise the amount of plastic I use, so the scoop outs go into a larger bag which I knot to keep the smell in, then when the whole tray needs changing I fill the larger bag up and put it in the wheelie bin.

Thanks for this. I was contemplating doing similar, or having a separate bin/bucket nearby to try and contain the smell.

The doggy bags I've bought are biodegradable/eco ones as I don't want to use too much plastic either.

Thanks for sharing.

Biodegradable bags and they go into the kitchen bin.

Thanks @Toddlerteaplease

My DP is of the opinion that even baby's nappies, tied in a nappy bag, shouldn't go in an indoor bin, so this could be a challenge! Grin (we don't have children, so don't worry - he's not leaving a baby unattended to throw a bag in the outside bin!!)

You could get a litter locker? It’s the same as a nappy bin. I use biodegradable bags in the kitchen bin too, it’s fine, sometimes I have to double bag just in case!

TooManyDogsandChildren · 02/12/2020 11:23

I use biodegradable doggy bags and put them straight in the outside bin. IME cat poo smells even through a bag so I wouldn't see it in the house at all.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/12/2020 11:31

Cheddars poo smells horrific. But the bags I use are fine. I get them from TKMaxx

The new world of litter is amazing to me. So much has changed in 15 years! I've just ordered a top entry litter tray, which I'm sure never existed when I got my last cat. A litter locker is also totally new to me! That's really useful - thank you. I may just see how we get on but have this as an option.

My old cat only used to eat dry food and this one's on wet food, so I imagine the poo is pretty pongy! My old cat could clear a room with a fart though! Grin

I got these poo bags from Amazon poo bags - the reviews that mention cat litter are good, so fingers crossed they won't let out the smell.

I am a huge fan of Cat's Best litter - it's a clumping type, made from wood, it's biodegradeable and flushable. I fill the litter box (quite deep) once every few months. Every day clumps are removed and flushed down the loo. It smells great, because the clumps have been removed, and it lasts FOREVER! When I finally do get around to changing it completely and cleaning the litter tray, I put the old litter in a bag in the waste bin, although I think it could also go in the garden.

I use clumping litter so pee goes in the kitchen bin and poo goes in the outdoor bin - in poo bags

Yarnivore · 02/12/2020 14:53

My latest rescue is the first cat I've had who's poo barely smells, I have to go in the room to check! I have a mini sized 'dustbin' outside the back door where I place poo bags until I tip them into the wheely bin. I use wood pellet litter and this can go in my garden waste bin (as long as no poo in it).

takemetomars · 02/12/2020 15:08

I use worlds best. It says it is flushable but you really shouldn't flush it. It will clog up your pipes

The rescue lady also recommended this so I've got this and a new top entry litter tray on order with zooplus (also had never heard of them!) Good to hear it lasts a long time. I've previously used wood pellets, but it's a nightmare with urine as it just disintegrates anything it touches and is a bugger to scoop out.

I'd probably not flush this, or any, cat litter as I've heard about it introducing potential nasties (Toxoplasmosis?) to the water system.

Im suprised any cat would ever want to use a top entry litter tray. They look designed for the owner and not the cat. One of mine would barely fit in one. He likes to move about in his tray and have a right good scrabble.

I thought the same but the rescue lady has both top and front entry trays and apparently they choose the top entry one!

I have both types and an uncovered one too so will give them a try.

Ours goes in compost bags and the whole lot, litter and all, goes in the green bin for composting. Was really pleased when the council said you could do this. (Not in the UK)

I just checked our council site. Apparently if you have plant eating animals you can compost it, but if you have meat eating ones you can't!
