‘Stray cat’ advice

In inverted commas because she is in really good nick if she is a stray.

We moved into our house about 18 months ago. We have nearly an acre and i’ve seem a cat around the whole time we’ve been here. Cat has been happy to sit at a distance from me but always quite aloof and has never come close or shown any interest - I assumed it was a neighbours cat (about 200/300 metres away).

Last night cat started acting really needy, came to me for the first time, rolling around on the floor and loved a bit of fuss. The cat seemed like it wanted to come in the house (It didn’t) and would not leave. Cat is back again today miaowing and wanting fuss. I called the neighbours because of the sudden change in it’s behaviour and they thought it was ours. Apparently they see it in their field hunting rabbits. No other near neighbours.

I put out a call on the local FB groups with a pic and another person in the village about 1/2 a mile away said it visits them but no one else recognised the cat. It must have a roaming distance of at least 1/2 square mile. I’ve left the garage door open and put a bed in there for shelter but I’m not sure what to do. My worst worry is that it’s pregnant and that’s the reason for it’s change in behaviour...but I know nothing really.

I don’t think I will be able to catch it, it likes cuddles but is quick on it’s feet.

If it is a stray, it’s lasted this long in the wilds of Yorkshire so maybe I shouldn’t interfere?? If I was to call RSPCA I think they’d call me daft as it’s in such good condition. Any advice?

I think Bella likes being warm!

I think she looks very happy.

TodgerStrunk · 15/01/2021 11:41

Are you able to have a squidge of her belly? Just in case the porkiness and sudden liking for you is not due to your generous feeding and winning personality but down to pregnancy?

Mia184 · 15/01/2021 17:40

Wow, she looks very happy.

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/01/2021 18:07

You really have to spell it out to some cats don’t you?.

“It’s nice being warm with a full stomach”

Whatthechicken · 15/01/2021 18:11

@TodgerStrunk I have managed to rub her belly this afternoon, it doesn’t feel as big as it looks when I felt it, definitely not squidgy or fatty. Not sure I’d describe it as hard though. I did find a few nipples and they look small and unimpressive. It was about 5 weeks ago when her behaviour changed and I’ve always had in the back of my mind that it might be because she was pregnant. Would her nipples have changed by now? She is very, very loving towards me (won’t be near anyone else though...for now), I was rubbing her belly and she was just rolling, padding and purring...I’ve never known a cat to be so loving given that a few months ago she wouldn’t have given me the time of day. Going to try to get her out of her shell a bit over the weekend (enough that I can get her in a box) and then get her to vets for a check up early next week (if they are doing such things right now?).

@Fluffycloudland77 haha yes you do!! I’m sure she is going to be really bored this weekend staying in, I think she loves being outside...but right now...she really does look like the cat that got the cream (sorry, couldn’t help myself!).

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 15/01/2021 22:33

Is she still in the house?.

Whatthechicken · 16/01/2021 09:00

Yes, keeping her in for the weekend, vets early next week (hopefully).

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/01/2021 19:52

How is she getting on?.

Sideorderofchips · 17/01/2021 22:28

My Foster cat didn't look like she was pregnant until About week before she had the kittens then all of a sudden her nipples grew and her belly dragged. She also became loving aftr being very standoffish

nettie434 · 18/01/2021 00:22

Bella is very well named - she is beautiful. I think you have done amazingly to tempt her in, WhatTheChicken, given that it sounds as if she has been living outside for a long time.

Whatthechicken · 18/01/2021 11:17

Aargghh @Sideorderofchips, just like Bella. I really hope she’s not pregnant! @Fluffycloudland77 she’s ok, probably a bit bored by now! I keep chewing over everything and just hope I did the right thing by feeding her and bringing her in. But any cat who had a comfy bed somewhere would surely not sleep in a straw bed outside in -4 conditions?? She loves her belly being rubbed and will come out to see me and my daughter, but hides when my son or husband goes in the room.

She’s off to the vets tomorrow! Got her booked in for a scan, check etc., so got to get her used to a cat box!

I thought the same when 2 cats lived in my garden, then over-wintered in my summer house. Couldn’t believe that any cat would stay out when they had a home to go to.

However, a trip to the vet found a microchip, and they belonged to a new neighbour, who was on maternity leave and had other cats.
So, I wondered if it was the children or the other cats that deterred them.

I now think it’s one of the other cats in particular, having seen it in fighting mode.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/01/2021 14:38

If she wanted out you’d know. Can she play with toys? Our feral tortie had no idea what toys were for.

Whatthechicken · 19/01/2021 11:09

@Fluffycloudland77 no she won’t play...I am trying though as I’ve see her play with leaves outside.

( Very expensive) Vet trip done!! No chip. Not sure if neutered...so we had a (very expensive) blood test to find out; results in 7 days. Vet seems to think she might be (because of the size of her back end) and can’t feel a pregnancy. The only way to know for sure about her being neutered would be to open her up or to have the test. She has also had normal blood tests done, has been wormed and had flea treatment.

Bella is currently sulking.

TodgerStrunk · 19/01/2021 11:16

Did they put in a chip with your details on?

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/01/2021 11:17

This was not what she signed up for was it? The indignity of a vets trip.

Whatthechicken · 19/01/2021 11:27

Not yet @TodgerStrunk, it feels a little early to claim her completely yet (might do one last SM shout out) and there was a lot to remember (I was quite nervous), not sure why really? Don’t think I’m going to let her out until I know about her fertility status (we are in for a rough few days of weather anyway, so I don’t think she will mind). I will then take it from there.

Fifilafrog · 19/01/2021 13:01

Just curious. How does the size of her back end show whether she's been neutered?

She'll forgive you for the vet trip...... eventually! 😂

TheLongRider · 19/01/2021 13:06

Neutered females tend to be plumper in the arse. A bit like post-menopausal spread, not that it happens to all females. If she has a short, cobby body it can be hard to tell.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 19/01/2021 13:26

A bit like post-menopausal spread, not that it happens to all females

I wish.

Secretly, and I know that TCN would not approve and that the OP would have palpitations, I was hoping for kittens!

Whatthechicken · 19/01/2021 19:29

@YetAnotherSpartacus cute as they are, I have no headspace for kittens right now! Although, if any appeared I would just get on with it. My kids have almost gone feral! At the minute, we’re winning if we all manage to get washed, teeth brushed and dressed...even the dog has had enough of us all being home! The chickens are seriously not talking to me either, they are in lockdown to (avian flu) and they just chunter at me when I go to see them for keeping them in their run.

We’ve just lost our old cat. I knew today would be the day because she didn’t get up for breakfast. I took some food and water to her and she had a lick but no more. Very peaceful passing, stretched out on her bed in her favourite place (next to the Aga) with her favourite person stroking her (her dad, she was always his cat, I met her when she was about 8). Run free little girl.

Oh I’m so sorry. You poor thing. It hurts so much doesn’t it?.
