Cat ate dental floss!

Im so so worried because I just don't know what will happen. My six month old female cat raided the bathroom bin and ate some dental floss. This happened about 48 hours ago. I heard some noise and as I walked in, she was gulping down the last of it. It was about 30cms long. First thing I did was contact the vet, took her straight in and she was given an injection to make her sick. Unfortunately it didn't work so we are waiting for it pass through or cause trouble basically. I am monitoring her closely, she is eating and using the litter tray as normal and seems to be her usual self. I was just wondering (and hoping) for any experience or stories of this happening to your cats?

The risk is it gets stuck inside her and concertinas her intestines. If she becomes unwell you must get vet attention immediately as she'll likely need emergency surgery

Oh lord what a nightmare.

Oh no what a nightmare.
Hope everything works out ok.The only thing I have heard is that whatever you do don't pull it out if it appears at her back end

Not dental floss but christmas ribbon. It wasn't good newsm she survived but was very, very ill. It tied her intestines up and cause all sorts of problems. Not what you want to hear but keep a very, very close eye on her.

Thank you all. I am certainly keeping a close eye, first sign of trouble and we are straight back to the vets.

A very similar thing happened to my cousin’s cat. It wasn’t dental floss, but cotton-the cat just started playing with a reel of it and started swallowing it. It was awful-the cat looked quite unwell by the next day-wasn’t moving much-they found cotton coming out of its mouth so could see what had probably happened. The vet had to open it up and do some major surgery-it had wrapped around the cat’s guts and the vet said it would have just sliced through it. The cat was fine after the op-and lived for years, but it cost them an absolute fortune!

I have always been totally paranoid about cotton/dental floss left in bins after that.

I’d keep a very close eye and see what the vet suggests. Do you have insurance?
