My boy got run over :(

Godawful evening last night when we found our beloved cat at the door unable to move his back legs. Vet suspects altercation with a car (though he generally has very good road sense), and he has a fractured pelvis - he's under supervision there for another 24 hours.

Presuming there are no further issues that come to light, he will need to be in a cage for 6 - 8 weeks while he heals. Which he will hate!

I wondered if anyone on here had ever gone through the same with their pet, and could advise on any tips to make it all a bit more bearable for him? I'm WFH at the moment, so am pretty much able to tend to his every whim (as I already did!).

Thanks very much all.

Oh how awful.

Thank god he's alive and you found him in time. Does the vet think he will recover?

impostersyndromeorjustshit · 20/11/2020 14:26

I know, my poor boy :(

They want to see him eat and wee today. But subject to that, and nothing else coming to light, a tentative yes.

He's 12 btw, so no longer all that young.

It's awful seeing them in pain isn't it Sad. Are you insured?

Will he be staying at the vet for a bit? Mine had an operation yesterday, he's looking all half shaved and sorry for himself today. I wish we could take the pain away from them and tell them it would all be ok.

impostersyndromeorjustshit · 20/11/2020 14:35

Yes, we're insured.

Been there, done that.

I had a chap called Curry hit by a car at about the same age. I'm not going to lie, it wasn't easy. We went through having to empty his bladder for him and he never regained full control of his bladder and bowel again. Never walked properly again either.

BUT was happy enough in his own little world, could still catch anything that moved and still climb trees. And we still adored him, and he was spoilt rotten.

Lived to 17.

impostersyndromeorjustshit · 20/11/2020 14:43

Thanks YesItsMe - how do you empty a cat's bladder for them?? (I dread to ask)

You hold them over a sink, under your arm, squeeze the tummy in the right place, apply antiseptic and plasters to injuries sustained during the process.
Helps to have a second person as the wounds are likely to be on your back.

I think we did it for about a month. He had acupuncture for a while which did seem to help a lot.

Yes, our cat got hit by a car the very first time she went out after moving in with us - she's a rescue cat. She hauled herself up the hill from the road and through the cat flap and woke DP up at one in the morning. Luckily it was a clean break and cage rest for six weeks sorted it. She had no other injuries that the vet could find and was given painkillers. She snuggled into bed with me this morning after her early morning foray into the garden.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/11/2020 15:04

He might hold it in due to stress but he’s done the hardest bit and survived the accident.

impostersyndromeorjustshit · 20/11/2020 15:09

Thank you all. It's a waiting game at the moment.

In terms of how your cats survived the actual 6 - 8 week cage process, did they get used to it after a time?

Curry was as miserable as sin tbh, but we took him out regularly for a some love and attention (and treats!). We'd place him on the sofa and sit on the floor next to him so he felt more part of the family. He loved listening to Classic fm but would yell for the opera to be turned off at 10pm 😁.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/11/2020 16:12

Well that’s no surprise I always get depressed listening to opera too.

Despite the damage caused there was absolutely nothing wrong with his hearing 😁

My brothers cat was hit by a car, punctured it’s lung and broke its pelvis, he’s absolutely perfectly fine now but spent around 2 months in a large dog cage while he healed! You could never tell now when you see him he had anything happen to him, he was also that tired and on that many tablets he wasnt in the slightest phased by being in a cage Flowers can’t imagine how you feel it’s horrible when your pets get hurt x

WitchesSpelleas · 20/11/2020 17:14

Sending positive thoughts Flowers.

Thank you all. He is a much loved cat.

Poor baby. It’s dreadful. Thankfully he is alive and will hopefully recover. He is beautiful.

My lovely-but-dim Walter was hit by a car just over two years ago, three weeks after my girl cat was hit and killed 😢 I was at work but lovely people took him straight to my vets and he was immediately put into a makeshift intensive care in an operating theatre. Given warm fluids because he was in shock. I was called and went straight there to sign consent forms etc (I'm insured thank goodness). They told me he had a head injury and looked very dazed (I did wonder if it was just his usual blank look 😂). Once he was stable the next day they x-rayed him and discovered several breaks in his pelvis. He came home on cage rest which was ok because at first he couldn't really move anyway, so he didn't try to get out. It was more of a gradual process really. As he got less fragile I would get him out for a cuddle on the sofa, and the vet guided us really on how much he could do. You'd never know now! He's still a bit dim but I wouldn't have him any other way. He can jump huge walls with no trouble whatsoever.

Lots of luck for a full recovery.

coastergirl · 21/11/2020 21:38

How is he?

impostersyndromeorjustshit · 22/11/2020 13:06

Stable but not improving to the extent they'd like. Still on heavy pain relief and reluctant to week, and one of his heart chambers has enlarged since being first admitted....

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/11/2020 13:34

Oh bugger. Are you allowed to see him?.

impostersyndromeorjustshit · 22/11/2020 14:07

No, we weren't even allowed in on the night it happened.

Found what did happen on the CCTV - he was in a kerfuffle with another cat and shot out in front of a passing car. I don't think the driver would have had any idea.

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 22/11/2020 14:12

Can you face time him?. It would probably cheer him up.

SwanShaped · 23/11/2020 15:08

My cat has just been hit too. He’s just had a scan and the vet said that his internal organs are all in his chest. Which is bad news. So they’re going to try to fix that first. Then look at his broken leg in a few days. Currently researching cages but want to know he’s ok first.
