How to keep cat off the kitchen surfaces!

mintich · 17/11/2020 08:53

Obviously when we are home, I take him off, but I'm sick of coming home to hair all over the surfaces.
I'm buying a cat tree as he obviously wants a high place to sit.
But is there something I can put on there to discourage him?

GrinGrinGrinit's not going to happen!

ZeroFuchsGiven · 17/11/2020 09:00

Line the worktop with tin foil when you go out.

TheSandman · 17/11/2020 09:08

Nope. Not going to happen. Other than keeping it out of the room there is no way.

A1A1 · 17/11/2020 09:10

Ours love running water Confused and let it into the kitchen every time they hear the tap! So weird.

I’m glad to hear other cats like kitchen surfaces though, was beginning to think we were being too lax... I don’t recall my childhood cat’s jumping up there (unless roast chicken was left on the side!)

AnnaMagnani · 17/11/2020 09:13

Cat sscat. Works. Doesn't hurt the cat although may make you jump when you have forgotten you set it up and walk past it Grin

Have used with 4 cats so far and kitchen worktops, dining room table - brilliant and the cats get it within 2 puffs. Then life continues as normal and the Cat ssscat goes back in the cupboard.

Clarich007 · 17/11/2020 10:22

Sorry I had to smile at your question. My cats use the worktops and hob as a little rat run to the kitchen window, despite having a cat flap 😃

WellThatHurt · 17/11/2020 10:26

I used to put cheap oven trays overlapping the edge of the worktop. When cat jumps on the tray falls and cat gets scared. May seem cruel but after 4 days he never attempted it again

Summerstorms · 17/11/2020 10:29

Spray them with citrus oils, cats hate them (or leave orange peel around)

AlwaysLatte · 17/11/2020 10:31

Try using the orange method spray, cats hate orange smells.

mintich · 17/11/2020 11:20

The cat flap is in the kitchen so can't keep him out. Ooh I'll try some of these tips!
He's so naughty Grin Our other cat just curls up on the sofa like a good boy!

Swap you cat for a Persian. They don't jump and have never been on the work surfaces.

vanillandhoney · 17/11/2020 11:39

In my experience, all they learn to do is not go in there while you're around Grin

My ex flatmate used to claim that the cats "never went on the work surfaces" but if we'd gone out and came home, we always heard a tell-tale "thump" as they jumped down!

TyroTerf · 17/11/2020 11:40

Meanwhile, on CatsNet: How do I train my human to stop this flapping and just develop a counter-wiping obsession already? I require somewhere clean to put my paws and bumhole, but she just doesn't seem to understand.

(Gave up and developed the habit of putting everything on a chopping board years ago!)

Jocasta2018 · 17/11/2020 11:42

We're talking about a cat here. Fat chance....

Whenwillow · 17/11/2020 11:44

Same problem here. It's probably deeply unhygienic but I just always wipe down work top before preparing food, and always use chopping boards anyway.
Cats are a law unto themselves!

timeforawine · 17/11/2020 11:46

Following for tips! I have a security camera in the kitchen so can see they are up there a lot of the night, maybe to make up for the fact they can't in the day as i spray them with water.
No idea why they are there, sides are clear and blinds closed so nothing interesting, they have cat towers and can sit up even higher in the utility room on top of the tumble dryer (it's on a worktop)
I tried tin foil on the worktops but it didn't deter them :-(

Crakeandoryx · 17/11/2020 11:48

Just keep the kitchen clean and wipe before cooking. Cats will do what they want. You can deter but they're just going to do it when your not in.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/11/2020 11:52

Oh the tell tale thump of cat getting down 😂

FannysSteadiedBuffs · 17/11/2020 11:57

Pet Behave Spray from Amazon. Smells nice and by the time it runs out all you have to do it wave the canister at the cat and they run.

Obviously still only works when you are in the room Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 17/11/2020 11:59

It's an earthquake in my house when Snorg gets off the bed. I don't know how a 4.5kg cat can sound like a full grown adult when she's on the move.

MyTwoBengals · 17/11/2020 12:12

IME it depends on whether the cat wants to get on the surfaces. My last cat never got on them or the kitchen table.

I now have two bengals. One doesn’t bother much with the surfaces, but the other one often jumps on to on the central island. She also follows me around the kitchen in the morning, by running over the work surface and leaping onto the kitchen table as I go to the window to open the curtains. It’s her morning ritual. And she demands constant head rubs as she does it.
We did put a tall cat tree in the kitchen and they both like to sit on it when we are preparing food or eating at the kitchen table.
Sometimes they like to sit on the kitchen stool

I feel I like I'm forever wiping! He probably likes the smell of the cleaner!
