Do I need to discourage this?

We've recently adopted a cat about 1 year old. He's very affectionate and playful and is settling in well.

The only thing is he bites, just gently, when we stroke him or as a way of getting attention.
So for example when following around the house he'll gently bite your legs. When being stroked he'll be purring away and will turn around and bite your hand, again just gently.
He has a habit of biting my daughters ear when she's playing with toys on the floor, she's 8.
It never hurts, but I say no and push him away. Try not to reward it with attention.
Can I do anything about this? Or is this normal cat behaviour?
First time cat owners if it wasn't already obvious!
Thanks 😊

You're doing the right thing by not rewarding it with attention.

There's a theory that saying 'oww!' loudly will discourage them, as cats would make that noise to one another if bitten.

It's not unusual for cats to do this when they're young.

Thanks, its reassuring to hear its quite normal.
I remember when we had a puppy years ago, being told that squealing loudly worked to discourage play biting. Same concept I suppose.

It’s play, if you watch lion cubs on wildlife programs they do it to the adults.

He’s just a very playful boy who sees you as a playmate.

OK, thanks. Its made my DD a bit fearful of stroking him unfortunately.
We'll continue not to encourage it. It doesn't hurt, she is a bit of a wimp to be fair!
