Gumtree Kitten Scams

Just a heads up to anyone searching for kittens at the moment. We feel pretty stupid but we've just been completely taken in by a scammer on Gumtree and lost £200 deposit. They posted an ad including what are - in hindsight - generic kitten pictures that magically seemed to tick all our boxes.

In our haste to satisfy some very eager and impatient children (these were supposed to be therapy animals, in part), we ploughed ahead, transferred money and then realised the address for pick-up didn't match exactly with a real address. Requests for more pictures went unanswered so we reverse-image searched their pictures; they'd been used before on another ad two years ago. After we confronted them over whatsapp they admitted they were a scammer (!) before deleting the messages and telling us the deposit was non-refundable. Result, devasted family.

What we should have done... First up, do a reverse image search on the pictures, especially if they look too professional or generic (perfect backdrops, pin-sharp quality, etc). Our scammer's phone number (which I'll put here, but which might get removed by mods, 07459 861 243) actually turns up on a number of kitten ads in Google's cache, with locations scattered around the South-East so it seems unlikely to be a legitimate business.

Secondly, be very wary of ads that seem too good to be true. We spoke to this guy and he of course assured us they were the right age, sex, healthy, etc., etc., for what we were looking for. Thirdly, don't pay a deposit via bank transfer. Apparently credit cards offer a guarantee against fraud (we don't have one)? And you can challenge paypal payments as well.

Be careful out there!

I'm sorry you were scammed. There's some absolute wankers out there. Have you reported it to Gumtree? You can also report it to Action Fraud. www.actionfraud.police.uk/

Action Fraud have a dedicated page of advice about pet scams too. www.actionfraud.police.uk/news/animal-lovers-looking-for-pets-in-lockdown-defrauded-of-nearly-300000-in-two-months

BeBraveAndBeKind · 15/11/2020 10:03

Oh, and credit and debit cards do offer protection for fraud amd other consumer disputes such as goods not received or as described but the seller would need access to a card payment system in order to be able to take them. In this case its a good job you didn't have a credit card to give them of they may well have used your card details for other things.

Have you contacted your bank to see if anything can be done? At the very least they should make a report to the scammers bank to report that they're receiving illegitimate funds.

prestonj · 15/11/2020 10:40

Sadly the bank didn't want to know and there's nothing they can do. We will report it to Action Fraud though.

You may have already done so but can you post on Facebook groups locally too?

prestonj · 15/11/2020 10:58

Not on Facebook, I'm afraid. But hoping that Google will pick up on "Gumtree Kitten Scam" and help warn off anyone else from being taken in!

This why gumtree shouldn’t be selling live animals. £200 is a massive amount for a moggie whose mum got knocked up in the back garden at 2am.

Vinorosso74 · 15/11/2020 11:22

I'm sorry you were scammed. There's some nasty people around. However, equally nasty are the people making money from the continued misery of their cats producing litter after litter of kittens. Do not look to buy animals this way.

prestonj · 15/11/2020 11:28

Yes, many lessons learned. :(

Always Google search first.
Say goodbye to your deposit and NEVER EVER send money without seeing the animal first... Why do people still do this Hmm their is enough info and stories going around about scams. Trouble is covid has brought out the desperate and scammers know this!!

Orkneys · 23/11/2020 12:14

Last of all don't buy off scum tree

sauvignonbonk · 23/11/2020 12:18

I was scammed on gumtree years ago when I was very young mum and saw a pushchair on there, lost £50. In hindsight it was so bloody obvious but I was naive and hadn’t suspected anything was amiss. I was glad it wasn’t more and it taught me to be a lot more aware. Scammers are absolutely rife on gumtree it seems.

FrankieChips · 24/11/2020 10:51

I never use Gumtree. I have sent several complaints about them selling animals but they never respond.

If you want a certain breed of cat there are breed specific rescue charities that can help.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 24/11/2020 10:56

When I bought my pups a few years ago there were so many ads in various places offering to "transport" them to you once you paid over World Pay to them

Hm2020 · 24/11/2020 12:35

My sister nearly did the same with a puppy until I showed her what came up on a google image search I’m very sorry this has happened to you

00100001 · 24/11/2020 12:36

i have no idea why people don't go straight to rescue shelters for pets.... stop funding the puppy/kitten farms!
