4 month old kitten stopped using litter tray

Hi. The last 4 days out 4 month old kitten has stopped using his litter tray over night and for 3 days poo'd in a corner of the kitchen, then this morning in 3 different places in the kitchen. They also seem more loose than normal
The only change this week has been his Whiskers food changed from the poultry in jelly to the fish in jelly due to a substitution in my shopping.
He still seems to be weeing and daytime poo in his tray but just over night.

We had him from 11 weeks through a rescue charity but he had been in a foster home since birth and used his tray perfectly from day 1.
Thank you

Change the cat food back, my departed boy could never tolerate fish either unless it was gourmet Hmm

Thanks. They have delivered his the normal one this week so I've put him back on that from today
I didn't think the same brand would affect him like that or I would have gone out and got his normal ☹️.

Perhaps buy a better quality kitten food.My lad is on Encore and Applaws.
The vet said Whiskas and Felix is only 4% meat and cats are obligate carnivors so need a high percentage meat.

Clarich007 · 15/11/2020 09:31

He's gorgeous by the way 😺😼

paradisebythedashboardlights · 15/11/2020 09:34

Thank you. He is, and a lovely personality too.

Thanks. I'm happy to try that, but the lady from the rescue said to keep him on the same food for at least 6 months.

If I were to change would you recommend switching one day to better food, or slowly by giving a bit of both.

Sorry. He's my first cat Smile

Sorry meant to say Encore and Applaws are up to 75-80% meat.I had no idea until she mentioned it to me.I have heard that Whiskas and Felix are rhe equivalent of McDonalds 😨

paradisebythedashboardlights · 15/11/2020 09:40

Thanks I can believe that, and thinking about it years ago we were advised by a vet not to feed our dog pedigree chum for similar reasons (he had skin irritations)) so I should have thought before now.

Certainly sounds more appealing for him as well

They don't only contain 4% meat. They have more meat than that but the named meat e.g. chicken, beef, etc has to be a minimum of 4% to be able to say it is that flavour.

You would introduce new food gradually

dementedpixie · 15/11/2020 09:42

Have you changed the type of litter at all?

Clarich007 · 15/11/2020 09:47

Thanks demented Pixie that sounds better.I thought 4% sounded really bady lad has Crave biscuits and they are grain free too.I recently saw a discussion here about cat foid and a vet disputed the grain free ones.
Confusing !

dementedpixie · 15/11/2020 09:49

Mine eat grain free dry food (encore and thrive) and then a selection of wet foods as they are fussy buggers

paradisebythedashboardlights · 15/11/2020 09:54

That does make me feel a bit better, no his litter is the same, and cleaned and changed very regularly

I'll put him back to the poultry flavoured then hopefully if that settles it down, then slowly change him to a better quality. At least he chose the kitchen floor not any of the carpets 😻

Mine will eat anything luckily, but he was born on the streets, tested positive for Calicivirus, was fed scraps. We got him at 18 months or so, so I am very aware of nutrition 😑

dementedpixie · 15/11/2020 09:56

Whenever my cats throw up they always choose a carpeted area rather than all the wipeable surfaces they could use. Wee shite bags Grin

paradisebythedashboardlights · 15/11/2020 09:57

Ahh. I'm glad he's found a nice home now. Thanks for everyone's help

Aww bless him, he sounds lovely.Cats are normally very clean so there must be a reason .Hope he is better soon

Clarich007 · 15/11/2020 09:58
