Kitten meows

I've had quite a lot of cats over the years but not had a kitten in a while.

My kitten (6 months) doesn't meow? Is that normal? She chirrups a lot and makes a strange squeak if she gets excited but has never made a proper meow like our older cat?

She is a handrear with no mum cat or brothers or sisters as she was found alone so I wonder if it could be the lack of early socialisation maybe? But then she's been with us and our older cat (who has totally adopted her) since July.

Any thoughts fellow cat people?

My ex-feral girl cat did not meow at all - she was practically silent, no growling, a purr was minimal. Her brother was slightly more talkative, particularly in calling for her (she'd just ignore him) until her first week at the cattery at 9 months old. She yelled the entire way home - full deep throated yowling. I assumed she'd heard one of the other cats going for it and thought it was a good idea. Over the next year she added hissing and growling at her brother, as ignoring wasn't working. And now at 3 she'll march into a room, quietly say "eek" and expect to be followed back to the food bowl. Yelling is reserved for car journeys. Purring is at audible levels.

Our two rescued kittens didn't meow for a long time. It's only the past few months they have started. The female cat meows more than our male, but mainly when she's waiting for dinner as its actually being made, and as I'm carrying it through - almost to say hurry up! Occasionally they will both meow to be let out but mostly they will just stare.

It's almost a year since they have been with us and only the last few months that we have had meows.

Her purr is extremely loud. She's also not very affectionate and much prefers to be jumping on big cats back than laid on the sofa with me. And she definitely does not do sitting on laps. She's an odd little thing!

I have a silent cat, although his purring is extremely loud. He occasionally attempts one and it comes out as more of a squeak.

Snort was silent. You'd see her mouth move but no sound. She then started quacking like a duck and has now properly learned how to meow. She's getting quite talkative.

Maybe your just really on it with the food bowl and she has no need to miaow a lot?.

tabulahrasa · 09/11/2020 10:56

My current cat started with a squeak... it’s now a meow, though a fairly quiet still a bit squeaky one

I've had a mixture of quiet cats and VERY noisy ones.
Sybil is a very small cat but has a purr that registers on the Richter scale and a very loud, regularly used, and very bad tempered miaow. Basil is generally much quieter and is also master of the 'silent miaow'. I like the variety Grin.

Our lady cat hardly ever meowed but used to chatter at flies and used to ' mrrrr'

I think Cheddar taught Snorg how to speak. She has a LOT to say for herself.

Haribo was 10 months old and didn't meow and after 3 nights of being stuck in a shed after falling in through the roof he, luckily for him and us, found his voice.
