Fireworks and kittens

Apologies if this has been done to death. But I just realised now Halloween is over we are in full on firework season. How do I ensure my kittens are not completely freaked out. What tips do you have for a first time cat owner. Tia.

Cats are saying “hmmm not sure about this litter tray...”

Keep your cats in, at least you know they are safe.
Try feliway plug ins. Or the calm drops from pets at home.
Put on the radio or tv for distraction noise.

I’m sure someone else will have other ideas. Gorgeous kittens btw!

Thank you. Lol!!

They don't go out so that's one thing. I will plug the Feliway back in for this week.

They may be totally fine OP. Mine aren't phased at all and never have been and they are 4 now. But as above, Feliway plug ins are meant to be great for chilling cats out x

Zylkene helped mine. Comes in capsules but you can open them & sprinkle it on their wet food - mine really liked the taste! Needs a few days to kick in properly, so I'd start asap if I were you!

We had fireworks going off all evening round here last night (sigh) Hmm

TheLongRider · 02/11/2020 11:53

Four out of five of mine are not at all bothered by fireworks. Girlcat used to growl at them! Fifth cat gets very unhappy and takes himself off to a dark corner. They're all kept in until late at night.

Round here fireworks have been going off intermittently since August.🙄

Mumdiva99 · 02/11/2020 12:58

Thanks for the reassurance.

(Off to Google Zylkene now....)
Hopefully they won't worry one way or the other. Last year we had some very loud ones very close.

Mine not bothered except when it’s next doors garden when one cat flared out the window in disgust and went to hide . The dog though is absolutely terrified of fireworks and thunder and hides .

Keep the windows shut, try and block out sound by putting down blinds or using a long door stopper to keep the sound out. If they are very nervous, use duct tape to reduce the air gaps in the room where they usually sleep.
Stay close to them in a dimed room. Lie with them, treats at hand, and give them extra nooks or empty boxes next to you, to hide in. They get less scared as they get older, but having you close by, calm and quiet, no visitors or loud tv or loud kids. Children are usually eager to help the frightened kittens and will understand if you explain the distress.
Hate fireworks and I Think of the foxes, birds and hedgehogs out there who don’t have calm snuggles and are terrified.

Wolfiefan · 02/11/2020 13:03

I keep curtains closed and the TV or radio on to help drown out noise. Mine quite like to watch them from the house. Grin

ContraIndicated · 02/11/2020 14:52

We’ve already had fireworks round here and my kitten is not bothered at all. He doesn’t go outside and is generally very laid back though.

Allergictoironing · 02/11/2020 15:01

Yep TV on quite loud & stay in the room with them chatting. Boycat was lying next to me on the sofa on Saturday having belly rubs, and watching the rockets out of the window - this is the cat who 4 years ago climbed into the guts of the sofa the first time he heard them! That was a particularly bad year, they started round here nearly 2 weeks beforehand and that's when I discovered Zylkene Smile

Mumdiva99 · 03/11/2020 13:47

I love the idea of cats watching through the windows. Thanks all.
