My beautiful black cat has been hit by a car. Please send lots of healing thoughts his way.

We got him to the vet within an hour of his accident. He has a fractured jaw and a dislocated hip. First X-rays show no internal injury around his chest but vet says not out of woods yet.

We've to wait until tomorrow and hope for no other internal injury developing or a head injury developing.

He's young and fit. He was meowing and trying to move. That's good right?

He's on fluids and methadone right now.

We've got insurance. If he doesn't have any further injuries he's likely to need 2 operations.

So - what next? How do I stop him crossing that bloody road in future?

He wears a quick release hi vis collar but that's not enough.

I love that cat. He's my tiny black Panther.

Please hope my cat will be ok.

One of mine survived a brush with a car. I'm sending healing thoughts your way.

ISaySteadyOn · 30/10/2020 20:46

No advice but Flowers. I hope he pulls through.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/10/2020 20:49

Sending healing purrs.

OhSweetNuthin · 30/10/2020 20:51

Sending healing vibes for your beautiful little panther.

SciFiScream · 30/10/2020 21:08

My DH is going through every single line of our insurance right now to make sure we get it all right.

I love that man. He didn't want cats but he's such a caring person and he looks after them so well. He lets them cuddle him on his knee.

He makes sure the kids chop up any big bits of meat to make it easier for the cats. He's a softy.

Now he's ranting about what he can do to make the road safer and adjustments to make to the cats lives to keep them safe.

He survived the impact so that’s more than mine did.

You can cat proof the garden, or build a catio.

kittensarecute · 30/10/2020 21:19

I hope your cat is OK, sending healing love and purrs from my own little panther xx

SciFiScream · 30/10/2020 21:21

@Fluffycloudland77 I'm sorry about your DearCat.

I've been researching catios.

Do you think he'll be scared of that road now?

My dcat went missing one cold Oct.. After 10 nights out he managed to get home. His back leg was badly broken. Vet said cold weather had slowed the bleeding. He managed on 3 legs just fine. No other injuries.

Dcats have 9 lives for a reason. Ime.

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/10/2020 21:28

You can hope but no I don’t think so, another one of mine got hit and didn’t avoid the road after.

I’ve heard of them voluntarily becoming house cats. He’s young & he’s in hospital so you have a better chance.

threecatsownme · 30/10/2020 21:30

I'm hoping and praying your little beauty pulls through. My boy is currently missing 2 days now.

RuudGullitOnAShed · 30/10/2020 21:39

One of my lovely cats had a run in with a van a couple of years ago - nothing was broken but he was very badly bashed around and very unwell.
My poor neighbour saw it happen and was convinced the cat was going to die - poor man (who is a real cat lover) was completely traumatised.

The vet thought he might have internal injuries - the first 48 hours were touch and go. He couldn't/wouldn't move and we didn't know if his bladder/bowels were working.
He came home and deteriorated so had to go back to the vets and stay overnight on painkillers and fluids - the good news is he made a great recovery.

He's an older boy so is a little stiffer than he used to be.
The bad news is the silly sod still crosses the road, however he spends a lot more time in the house - maybe because he is older.

I hope your boy pulls through.

@threecatsownme - fingers crossed that your boy waltzes in as if he has never been away.

slipperywhensparticus · 30/10/2020 21:44

Catio or cat proof garden i could never rest if this happened to one of mine

I live by a main road they are house cats because of it

londontree · 30/10/2020 21:45

Hope he soon recovers fully. My feline was hit by a car and managed to get home and pretended to be fine. Until he got off the bed he was napping on and I noticed he had one leg completely out of shape and not weight bearing.

Scuffed paws examined, and an x ray later, and the vet was explaining the need for complex orthopaedic surgery on one front leg.

£4,000 of pet plan insurance paid out for surgery, 16 weeks of cage rest and external leg pins, and he was back to himself again.

He was only 2 so had a good chance of a full recovery.

He has always been an enthusiastic eater of free range organic wild foraged mammals and birds. I chose to let him continue his sure flap freedom and exploring lifestyle. He comes and goes as he has wants, and continues to enjoy an amazing quality of life.

It's been 8 years since the accident and no other car hits, so maybe he became more cautious. We live in a quiet area and the vet said occasional traffic is more likely to get them than a busy road which they can see the risks of.

Hope you're soon feeding endless amounts of Dreamies to a convalescent cat.

SciFiScream · 30/10/2020 21:46

My DH and I are trying to think of new rules for the cats and my son (14) has been on the council website trying to find out how he can make the road safer (he cycles across it twice a day and it's terrifying)

DS is going to email our local councillors to ask for improvements.

@threecatsownme I hope your boy is home soon.

I so sorry. He just has to be ok so sending everything positive I can.
We had a cat in a full leg cast - the vet had said it would need amputating. But she pulled through without even a limp.
Catios maybe a possibility.

CaraDuneRedux · 30/10/2020 22:02

Sending best wishes.

My first cat got hit by a car and her leg was shattered - operations, steel pins, you name it. She survived, was very wary of cars thereafter and lived to the ripe old age of 17.

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/10/2020 22:14

Catios are easier, it took more than one person dying on my childhood road for the zebra crossing to become a pelican crossing.

MrsCatE · 30/10/2020 22:19

Hugs and best wishes Flowers

BastardCat had a serious accident.
Very long story but involved around 15 days in Specialist Small Animal hospital (think Supervet), an external cast and cage rest for at least 8 weeks - bit of a blur. We had good insurance but excess was many thousands.

He's still with us! He's not as agile as he was and we know he'll be arthritic in the future.

We give him loads of supplements to try and delay onset.

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/10/2020 22:20

One of mine was hit by a car 6 years ago.
She lost a leg, a toe and a tooth but she's absolutely fine now, still rules the roost here.

emmacat · 30/10/2020 22:32

Sending best wishes... im so thankful for the fact mine won't leave the garden - her own choice. Catios are a good idea..

MissingEsme · 30/10/2020 22:57

Poor kitty. My Charlie was hit by a car 4 years ago when he was 2. He was missing for 2 nights. We were going home after searching for the second night when I heard his very faint meows. Rushed to vet. He had split his chin right down the middle, numerous jaw fractures both sides and very wobbly on his back legs. Vet suggested pts but I refused because I could still see life in my little boy and I could see he was still strong. I'm in the west of Ireland and I took him to UCD Veterinary (Dublin), 4 hours drive away for second opinion. Long story short, they wired his chin. He had one small break in his jaw that didn't need surgery. He spent 5 nights there getting checked over. He came home with a feeding tube because his mouth was too sore. Now, apart from being blind in one eye and a chunky monkey he is perfect and is petrified of the road, thankfully. I'm sending lots of healing to you and your kitty.

ItsNotPinkItsSalmon · 30/10/2020 23:06

I hope your little kitty is okay!
My DB's cat was hit when she was about 1. She had to have to her leg amputated. They weren't sure if she was actually booted by someone on the street or hit by a car. She is fine and adapted well.
Some roads are just so unsafe and what makes it even worse is that drivers don't have to stop if they hit a cat but do a dog Hmm.
One of our roads which leads onto residential houses is bloody dangerous. No speed bumps down it it's just one massive long road so of course people speed down it. I've stopped and picked up two dead cats from that road now. It's heartbreaking yet it's still not enough for them to change the road.

Fluffycloudland77 · 31/10/2020 05:53

What time can you ring?.

SciFiScream · 31/10/2020 08:41

We can call after 9am. Clock watching right now.
