Cat has fleas

Saw something moving on my indoor cat, went out and got a flea comb and he has fleas!! Vet had advised he didn't need monthly flea treatment as he is an indoor cat but he's obviously got them from somewhere.

What does everyone else with indoor cats do re flea treatment? Do you have monthly treatments, through your vet or not?

Spot on treatment prescribed by the vet. Don’t ever use a flea collar - they’re useless, and if you don’t believe me just google why.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 29/10/2020 02:08

Mine too and now the house has them Envy. Cats have been treated with the spot on treatment but the issue is they keep reappearing as there are eggs and stuff in carpets despite numerous hoovers and spraying. Will be doing monthly treatments from now on as this is a right pain!

Fleas have now moved on to my ankles as well as biting the cats.

Flea treat cat and flea bomb rooms in turn while keeping cat out of them.
Hoover at least daily, twice daily ideally (pay particular attention to skirting boards / edges of furniture), and empty hoover into outside bin so there is no risk of the buggers re-infesting your home.
You should see a dramatic improvement in a week or so.

Indorex. Usually very cheap from pet supermarket website. Few cans should do the trick.

recess123 · 29/10/2020 02:58

Oh god @ColonelNobbyNobbs this is my ultimate fear that they will keep reappearing!

I just keep combing (when he lets me that is) and finding more. Feel so horrible for him, he's been itching for a while but I just thought his new collar was annoying him. Poor kitty.

Calling vets in the morning and planning on getting his treatment sorted then washing his blankets and the sofa covers, cushions etc on a hot wash. An unplanned spring clean I guess!

Well we’re not far off Christmas so it can be your Christmas clean.

There’s an injection they can have that stops fleas breeding but doesn’t kill them but it might help you break the cycle when combined with a spot on @ColonelNobbyNobbs.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 29/10/2020 10:06

Thanks fluffy we are bringing them to the vets tomorrow to see what else we can do. In the meantime they are confined to the kitchen while we try and clean the carpets!

Just got my flea package from the vets (£56!). They gave me stronghold so he's just had that. Done the first hoovering and washing of his bedding and his favourite blanket.

Got some indorex too, thanks for the recommendation, will be doing first round of that tonight and then hoovering again tmrw!

Do people use a their vet? Or use a monthly subscription, I've seen some companies online which send you monthly treatment for £6ish a month

I use a vet. Many years ago I had the council in because of fleas plus a new baby (paranoia!) and he just treated the skirting and little cracks, as he said that's where they go.

dementedpixie · 29/10/2020 16:09

I thought the advice was to regularly treat indoor as well as outdoor cats as people can bring them into the house on clothing. I have a vet plan and my flea/wormer is through that

recess123 · 30/10/2020 01:09

@dementedpixie I had the conversation with my vet and he said as my cat doesn't go out he probably won't need de fleaing and working regularly but nope, going forward I'll be doing it monthly!

lilmishap · 30/10/2020 01:15

hoover the living shit out of everything.

recess123 · 30/10/2020 01:27

I'm permanently paranoid and feel itchy everywhere. Just sat here wondering how many loads of washing I can get done in one day... 🤦🏽‍♀️

My indoor cats had fleas a few years ago. Only ever saw 1 flea on 1 cat, didn't see any in the house anywhere or on my other cat. Indorexed everywhere. Advocat flea treatment. Hoovered everywhere every day. The fleas reappeared the same time the following year (summer). Indorex and Advocat again. Not had them since.

I did used to give them monthly flea drops. But since they didn't come back the next year, I stopped doing it. It's powerful stuff for a very small chance of them getting them again.

cuparfull · 30/10/2020 02:19

I buy Stronghold online without prescription ( comes in from Singapore) and treat my two regularly every 4-6 weeks. Once you have your environment under control just mark dates on the calendar to remind you.... Had 2/3 cats for years and this has always worked. We haven't had ankle bites or seen any fleas in carpets. Hate to use house sprays cos of the residue. Vets repeat prescriptions are toooo expensive.
Always vac the skirting joints/ edges of rooms and your stripped bed every time you change sheets. And chill, good luck.

StarCat2020 · 30/10/2020 02:56

It might be worth calling up pest people in your area and seeing what they would charge to treat your home??

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 30/10/2020 10:18

@cuparfull where can this be bought please? I can only see it with prescription, which I don't imagine my vet would be pleased to offer!

dementedpixie · 30/10/2020 10:19

You can pay for a private prescription from your vet and then buy online.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 30/10/2020 10:49

Is that worthwhile @dementedpixie ?

dementedpixie · 30/10/2020 13:14

Depends how much the vet charges for the prescription. I haven't done it but it is an option

recess123 · 31/10/2020 02:21

Done so many loads of washing today! All his bedding, blankets etc and all our bedding, cushion covers. Still got actual sofa covers to do but that's a job for tomorrow.

Hoovered everything downstairs and indorexed, scrubbed the skirting boards, used a Bob Martin(?) flea spray too on everything.

Ordering a new cat tree for him tomorrow. The Bob Martin stuff i found was fab as it turned all the eggs red, he had probably a hundred on his cat tree/bed which because of the dark colour of it and the eggs being black I never would have noticed! Made me feel slightly sick. Boil washed it all and accidentally broke it, so another one ordered!

Round 2 again tomorrow, tackling upstairs!

I found 2 dead fleas on him today, I saw him itching earlier but gave him a good brush with the flea comb now and didn't vet any fleas or eggs which fingers crossed is a good sign and it stays this way!
