Cat Tent for Feral

Hi all,

I have a feral cat that comes to my back door - I feed him and he sits on a set of shelves I put out there (mainly to give him somewhere to sit that is not on the ground). He seems to want to come in but is too frightened and, besides, I'm not sure what my elderly lady would say about it (hiss, would be a good bet).

If him coming in is not an option, perhaps a tent might be. Can anyone recommend a good tent for an outdoor cat? I don't know where he sleeps, but I want him to have somewhere when the weather gets bad.

I like the Mr Snugs, it'll fit better on the shelf. Unfortunately the garden is shared so the other one isn't really a starter.

Although if I buy that one, you know he'll decide to move for the indoor life!

Plastic box with lid, polystyrene insulated box with lid inside plastic box, cut cat flap size hole in both boxes. Put straw between plastic box wall and insulated box, put both lids on - feral cat shelter. Easy to clean and nice and snug.

We have this. We don't have a cat flap so if ours go out and don't come back before we go bed and we have put a furry igloo type think in there also.

Our neighbor has multiple ferals and has an old children's plastic Wendy house insulated with polystyrene and every 3/6 months pops some fresh carpet in there for them.
She also has large plastic boxes with holes in so they can eat and food doesn't go to mush

Make it really plush, he’s bound to move into the house then.

We took an old cat once who was out in sub zero temperatures and not fed enough & the resident old lady cat wasn’t too bothered.

Well, everyone, I've ordered this for him - it'll fit on the shelf outside. Then, if he wants to come in, I can bring it into the house to give him somewhere he feels safe to sleep (out of Madam's way). I generally use old fruit boxes to feed him - as pp has said, holes in the bottom prevents the mush.

Hope the link works properly.

@Lonecatwithkitten

Mind you, your instructions are good. I'll pass them to my DSis, who has more room in her garden for boxes.

And a polystyrene base for him to sleep on, under his fleece. I can do that.

That went well. I ordered it and I haven't seen a hair of him since. It's in the garden now and a ginger boy I've been feeding had a sniff of it. Hopefully, he'll find a use for it.

@TheSecondMrsAshwell Have you kept the box? Is it too late to return it? It isn't waterproof. Someone donated one to our clinic saying they had bought it specially for us to shelter ferals. I was sceptical that it would be waterproof and so tested it. It most definitely isn't waterproof and is no good at all as an outdoor shelter unless it is already under some other sort of roof.

And I hope he comes back.

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 02/11/2020 17:28

I did get rid of the box. Yes, it's on a bottom shelf of a set of shelves. I turned it sideways so it doesn't face out into the rain. I think duct tape is my friend here. Don't mind how it looks.

Time to get the toolbox out.
