Cat sickness/diarrhoea and concerned about treatment

Hi all

I’ve four cats now. Oldest is 11 years old and we’ve had her 9 years. We adopted another cat just over a year ago, now coming up to 10 years old, after we had stayed with my parents for a short while and she was missing their cat so we tried this companion cat for her, and they get on well and are friendly.

We have recently taken on two new kittens who are now four months old. One, the male, is a bit of a full on kitten. The female is quite calm and laid back, easy personality. We have had them for two and a half weeks, and we are still keeping them relatively separated especially at night.

Our eldest cat, Fennel, was sick three days ago and had some diarrhoea. We thought it may be stress, so kept an eye on her. She was sick again yesterday and it was odd, like mucus (pic attached) with red bits in. And sick again this morning with runny poo. She has barely eaten in this time, which is not like her at all.

She was seen by the vet today and the vet said it could be an infection as she had a raised temperature, so she administered an injection (unsure what - husband took her in) and has given us some Vetpro paste that we need to give her over the next 9 days. It seems to be kaolin based.

The problem is, it’s a lot of paste. We can’t put it on food as (a) she’s not eating and (b) she can always sense even if we hide the tiniest thing in food, and this amount of paste is not tiny.

We have just had the most horrendous ten minutes trying to hold her and force the paste into her while she struggled and lashed out.

My worry is - if stress is a factor, surely this is making it so much worse?

We will call the vet tomorrow but just wondered if anyone here had any thoughts.

Incidentally one of the kittens is off his food too, though he has no temperature and the vet said it might just be nausea in his case and gave him an anti sickness jab. He’s not showing any other abnormal signs and poo is fine.

I’m just a bit concerned. Worms crossed my mind, though both kittens are wormed and vaccinated.

She’s got pancreatitis, poor thing. Kept in overnight for rehydration and painkillers.

Poor thing. My cat had that. Hope you've got good insurance.

Hope she'll be on the mend quickly now you have a diagnosis Smile

Fortunately yes. The four of them cost us a small fortune, but it’s worth it.

Poor cat, I hope she’s better soon.

Update this lunch time. She is still not eating. They’re fitting a feeding tube this afternoon, and will also do an abdominal ultrasound to make sure there’s nothing else causing the pancreas inflammation. Poor thing. Eating is her favourite thing in the world, so you know there’s something up.

Photo of Fennel, just because.

She’s beautiful. She must feel awful though.
