Adding a cat with our 'awkward' cat

We rehomed our cat from the RSPCA about 4 years ago. She was about 15 months old and had been abandoned pregnant. She was found with her kittens in an alley. We were told she had to be rehomed as an only cat. Four years on she is much more.mature and calmer. We would love to get another rescue cat, as we've always had two or three.

Has anyone rehomed a cat in these circumstances or would you just not bother.

Honestly I just end up throwing another cat in the mix and letting them work it out themselves ( I have 9 and have never had any issues beyond the hissing) - I think it's worth a shot, you could foster one to test the water but I'd recommend getting a calm cat rather than a kitten.

How does she she react if she sees another cat?

We’ve a cat who is definitely an only cat. We’ve had her since a kitten and we had a relatives cat stay for a while but she hated the other cat. Thankfully the house is big enough to keep them separate and she was pleased when the other cat left. Dogs and babies she’s fine with. So I wouldn’t bother

My cat is an only cat, we had to look after SIL's cats for a while when ours was an older kitten, but even after a whole month, he would still hide, and the fights just got worse, blood spray up the wall from a nick on the ear a couple of times (his) After they left he was back to normal.

He is however, a predatory cat outside when he sees other cats, he'll hunt them down. He usually comes off worse but no other cats come anywhere near our house now.

I couldn't be arsed with it full time. He's happy as a lone cat, and I'm happy that he's happy Smile

Hi sebw.
I wouldn't in those circumstances.I speak from experience. We had a 3 yr old cat and thought a kitten would be nice too.He was a dream, fitted in inmediately and was happy and purry. Our cat went barmy, hissed spit and attacked him all the time, then after a week she decamped to live in the garden shed ! The kittens owner took him back but I missed him so much, still think about him now.
We also had littermate sisters who lived to be 19 and 20.When the first one died, the other came into her own and was much happier.
If you think about it in human terms, it would be like a stranger turning up on your doorstep one day and moving in .How stressful would that be.
I wouldn't get another if I were you

I would try it, but that's just me. Like PP, I've always just added cats (we currently have three) with no issues. None of them are related - two males and a female, aged 5yo, 4yo and 6 months. We've never had a single fight beyond a few hisses.
