Feliway diffuser- cats too sleepy?

NotABeliever · 11/10/2020 20:19

I have a new kitten - totally gorgeous! - and bought a Feliway diffuser to make introducing her to my other kitten (6 months older) easier. Despite a bumpy start, after 3 days the two kittens are inseparable which is lovely to see but I notice they sleep a lot more, usually curled up together. The kitten is not very playful anymore, she just sleeps a lot. Can it be the Feliway diffuser working too much and would it be advisable to switch it off now that they get on well? Maybe they just like sleeping together and are nice and ward and cozy.

They are gorgeous!

Wowzeers they are fabulous. Look totally content, warm, loved and safe. The weather has turned and they are indoors snug - what’s a cat going to do but sleep?!
I’m not sure you can overdose on the deli way plug in - do the instructions mention anything? But if in doubt, switch it off and see what happens, you can always switch it back on.

Feliway not deli ———I’m hungry now!

Beamur · 15/10/2020 23:41

My cats are more chilled with a Feliway, but not noticeably sleepier.
Is the kitten otherwise healthy? Eating, drinking ok? Etc.
Cats do sleep a lot but I would expect bursts of activity from a kitten.

Your cats are gorgeous!

Those cats are gorgeous - Burmese?

Cats love it when the central heating goes on in autumn - I think it does make them sleepier. Also, they normally sleep about 18 hours each day anyway, so I doubt it's just the diffuser. Provided they're happy and healthy, and not eating themselves to obesity, I don't see a problem with their sleepy lifestyle.

Thank you all! I'm so lucky to have them. I absolutely adore them Smile
In the last couple of days they haven't been as sleepy as when I first put the Feliway on but they still snooze a lot on the cat tree. I haven't switched it off.
The kitten is definitely very active at times! She loves cat teasers with feathers, she goes ballistic chasing it and biting it.
I have noticed that they have got very hungry as well. They're a bit food obsessed at the moment and I'm not sure if that's because I'm not feeding them enough or if it's just they way they are? I feed them twice a day and they absolutely devour it like they haven't eaten for days! They also go looking for food a lot d
in between feeds...maybe I should start another tread about this! Anyway, this is them again 😊

How to tell if they're eating too much? Do they look a healthy weight?

They look just right, weight-wise. Some breeders keep their oriental breeds very slender, for show purposes, but I think cats look better with a reasonable amount of flesh on them, so their spines don't protrude. Plus, they are more cuddly that way. Smile

Beamur · 17/10/2020 10:42

They really are beautiful. I love orientals, we have 2.
One of mine is an absolute gannet. I've always had cats that I could feed on demand so this greediness is new to me. She asks for food every time I go in the kitchen!
It's very hard to ignore a persistent cat Grin

NotABeliever · 17/10/2020 14:29

They're actually Russian Blues. That's the only breed I'm not allergic to! They're my first two cats and I'm so in love 😍
If anyone can offer any advice regarding the feeding, I'd be really grateful. I'm currently feeding them about 60 gr of raw meet in the morning and 80 gr of cooked chicken or fish in the evening. Breeder said to just feed them raw meet when they get to 6 months but he hasn't specified the amounts! I often give them a little snack of ham half way through the day. But they're still ravenous all the time and oh so vocal whenever I'm pottering around the kitchen so I'm wondering if I'm undeefeeding them? Or are they just being cheeky?

Cats very quickly associate kitchen noises with food preparation, so will beg/demand food whenever they hear you in there, especially if you cave in easily. Are you in the habit of giving them some ham when you make a ham sandwich for yourself? Or feeding them bits from your plate? If so, you've made a rod for your own back, as the two of them will gang up on you and force you into submission with their cries and plantive expressions. Grin They are VERY manipulative!

It's interesting that you are not allergic to this breed. Cat allergies are caused by a protein present in their saliva, and the amount varies from cat to cat. The protein/allergen levels tend to increase as the cats age, so it's possible that as your cats mature you could develop a reaction, although allergic people sometimes have a reduced reaction to their own pets.

NotABeliever · 17/10/2020 19:20

I hope I don't become allergic to them! I did notice that I react a bit to the kitten whereas I'm completely ok with the older one so you're probably right, it must depend on the individual cat as well as the breed. Let's hope it doesn't get worse!!
Anyway thanks for the advice regarding feeding. I think you're right, they know I'm a softie and can get ham if the miaow loud enough. How to resist them though?

I’ve always free-fed kittens, baby animals need extra calories compared to adults.

Contact the company making the raw food and ask what they recommend for kittens because being hungry is actually painful. A lot of humans are never properly hungry so I think we’ve forgotten hunger hurts.
