What have they put in Felix? Crack?

8 month old cat is suddenly ravenous - she's begging for more food every hour or so since I bought her some Felix pouches rather than Whiskas. What makes it so delicious? I'm assuming it's really bad for her as she likes it so much!

You’ll probably find she goes off it completely, the minute you buy a jumbo stock of it... Grin
My own cat, (known as Madam the Verminator by my DDs), used to love Felix in jelly, went off it, and now loves Felix in gravy. I expect her interest to wane soon. But her all time favourite food is live mice. And birds, bluebottles, butterflies - she’s a fearsome hunter!

JasperLily · 09/10/2020 23:41

Most wet foods, other than the really expensive stuff, have a fair bit of sugar in. Probably why so many cats now have dental issues.

I do feed mine Felix (they didnt get on with Whiskas) but they also get good quality biscuits as well.

Mine seem to have been more hungry and constantly looking for more food since the weather turned colder.

KingaRoo · 09/10/2020 23:45

If you look at the ingredients brands like Felix and Whiskas have really poor nutritional value and are made up of fillers like wheat and things that cats should not have in their natural diet, certainly hardly any actual meat.

Much better to feed a brand with high meat content. It's more expensive by weight but they need less of it. Something like Bozita or Animonda Carny or Feringa are good. I buy them from Zooplus.

It could be the change in the weather both my cats have started crying for food and eating double the amount of pouches and the dried food.

ladybird69 · 09/10/2020 23:50

@JasperLily sorry didn’t read your whole post. I’m putting it down to the weather too.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 10/10/2020 00:27

We've run out of Felix today and I've given her some Whiskas and she's leaving it (and biting me!) this evening. Think it might be time to start getting her the better food. Dammit. Expensivo!

Yes to the colder weather! Both the cats and the dog too seem to have become more hungry.

Bargebill19 · 10/10/2020 00:57

We’ve always suspected it has the cat equivalent of crack cocaine in it. Every cat we’ve ever had has been addicted to the stuff and refuses to eat anything else in the cheaper ranges. Darent try anything really fancy as I’ll have to take on a second job!

1forAll74 · 10/10/2020 01:19

My three cats have Whiskas and Felix, but all three of them just sniff and walk away from any Felix fish varieties,, but not the Whiskas fish varieties.

A neighbour gave me two boxes of Wilko cat food, meat and fish, his cat would not touch it, and neither would any of mine !!

Gingerkittykat · 10/10/2020 02:31

My kitten was sent home from the breeder with super expensive Royal Canin kitten pouches, she refused them and devoured my older cat's Felix.

Swimminginroses · 10/10/2020 07:41

I have a decent stash of felix in jelly pouches but I’ve just put mine back onto raw.
She must be very pleased about it as she’s been very affectionate these past few days, she never normally approaches anyone for a cuddle!

Babdoc · 10/10/2020 08:46

JasperLily, sugar isn’t listed anywhere in the ingredients of Felix.
As cats can’t taste sugar - they have no sweet receptors on their tongues- it wouldn’t make a brand attractive to them.
The dental problems are more likely related to wet food adhering to the teeth, and not containing any fur, feathers or small bones to aid in scraping them clean. I feed dry food as well to help with this, and my cat is a successful hunter, eating plenty of wild vermin.

JasperLily · 10/10/2020 11:44

Babdoc. Felix as good as it looks and plain Felix definitely has sugar in the ingredients list.

Ingredient(s): Meat and animal derivatives (Chicken/Beef 4%), Vegetable protein extracts, Fish and fish derivatives (Salmon/Tuna 4%), Minerals, Various sugars. Additives: Moisture 80%, Protein 13%, Fat content 3%, Crude ash 2.2%, Crude fibres 0.5%, Linoleic acid 0.2%, (omega 6 FA)

Composition: Meat and animal derivatives, fish and fish derivatives (salmon/tuna/cod/plaice 4%), molluscs and crustaceans (prawn 4%), derivatives of vegetable origin, minerals, various sugars

JasperLily · 10/10/2020 11:45

Agree though the lack of bones etc does contribute to the dental issues.

Babdoc · 10/10/2020 13:23

Ah, sorry Jasperlily, I feed my cat Felix 7+ meat in gravy, and there’s no sugar listed there.
It’s concerning that you’ve found it in their other products. It’s certainly not a natural food for an obligate carnivore, and as I mentioned, the cat can’t even taste it. Have you contacted the manufacturer to ask about it, or do you just avoid the product?

Pelleas · 10/10/2020 13:35

What have they put in Felix?

Dreamies Grin.

Bargebill19 · 10/10/2020 13:43

My cats evidently haven’t been issued with the same operating system @Babdoc @JasperLily as they fight for the porridge bowl (dh has his with sugar) and I’ve just caught one of them eating raspberry ripple Swiss roll.
It’s not as if they haven’t got 4 bowls of fresh food available ....

Babdoc · 10/10/2020 13:52

Bargebill, that’s probably the standard cat bloody mindedness of wanting whatever they can’t have. “How very dare my humans have separate food and try to stop me eating it!”

Bargebill19 · 10/10/2020 13:56

@Babdoc so true!!🤣

Papergirl1968 · 10/10/2020 18:55

One of mine likes cake.
