Cat abscess treatment?

What is the correct way to treat a Cat abcess?

My cat has an abscess from a Cat bite. We couldn’t speak to the vet, so they told us he’s had pain relief and had given us cream to put on for 5 days and we had to ask for a collar.

I’ve read that the cat should be injected with antibiotics and have anti inflammatories.

Anyone have any experience?

When ours had a bite on his ear the vet got all the gunk and infected tissue out; cleaned it and have him an antibiotic injection. I assumed this was normal procedure.
When I had a cat bite myself I also had it cleaned out and a week worth of antibiotics.

We have just finished treatment for this .Our cat developed and abscess on his cheek /neck area and was very unwell. The vet lanced the abscess under anaesthetic and the wound was then left open to drain over the course of a week .Cat of course given a collar. He was also given antibiotics both i.m and oral and a wound spray between visits .The vet saw the cat about every three days to monitor healing Treatment lasted 10 days .The cat is up and about again and allowed outside.

Thanks both. He’s had antibiotic injections Before in cat fights before an abscess has even formed. So I’m confused why he hasn’t been given any at all with an actual abcess this time. They told us on the phone just now that it’s because it’s a ‘superficial wound’

My girls burst. But took her to the emergency vet anyway for pain relief. Turned out she also had a punctured eyeball.

There is no one way to treat an abscess we assess location, 5 cardinal signs of inflammation ( swelling, heat, redness, pain and loss of function), cats general well being ( temperature, eating, drinking etc). Then make a plan based on all the findings range could be:-

Small burst abscess, no temperature, eating and drinking normally, no pain at site. Just bathing and maybe nothing else.
Really unwell cat, very high temperature, large abscess at important site ( eg neck) admit IV fluids, antibiotics, pain killers when well enough general anaesthetic lance, drain and flush. Whilst this might seem over kill I had a cat last month who was so unwell he forgot to eat despite fluids and needed a feeding tube for three weeks.

It's a good job she has so much hair and I didn't see it before it burst because I'd have been desperate to squeeze it!

I squeezed departed bengal boys head abscess after it burst and the vet gave him antibiotics.

It took bloody ages to drain and it was the only time in his life he rubbed his head on my leg in the morning too so the crusty bit scraped on my skin.

Old Madcats were forever getting into scrapes. We only needed to have one abscess drained.

Luckily the vet warned me about the likely smell - I nearly vomitted!

Lone cat- he was in quite a lot of pain Before the pain relief and not himself at all, very subdued. Wouldnt let us go near the abscess.Sad not eating as much.

Viv0321 · 09/10/2020 17:54

No. she said she didn’t give it as it’s only superficial.
