Two kittens or one?

We've got one kitten reserved and coming to us end of October....but there is one left from the litter which still doesn't have a home, and I am really considering whether it would be better (for the cats) to have two.

I'm in particular thinking that they would be more likely to play together while small and leave our dog alone, and perhaps be company for each other when we are away?

The one we are getting is a boy, and the second one is a girl, if that makes any difference.

Any advice or experiences are welcome!

Once you've bought all the stuff for one, you might as well have two. And it's not much more in insurance etc.

Actually you do need to double up on some things, litter trays in particular. The cost of owning 2 is almost double owning one. Vets bills are not cheap and you need to consider the routine things not covered by insurance.

That said, I would always take 2 Grin

The doubling up of stuff seems to be a bit of a dividing point - some do, some don't, I guess it depends on the cats?
Anyway, I went to see them again today and as expected we've decided to take the girl too :) I shall post pictures when they move in!

well, with the litter trays I think it partly depends on your long term plan.

My cats don't have a litter tray, they have a cat flap. So sharing as kittens isn't an issue if in a few months they won't have alitter tray.

But food, we always had a bowl each. They often ate out of the other bowl, sometimes even swapping half way through the meal, but there were always 2 bowls.

That's great news OP. You will not regret it!

We used one tray when our boys were tiny but got a second as they and their stinky turds grew, now both cats pee in one tray and poo in the other.

Definitely get 2 litter trays for kittens. If you end up with a fussy kitten it will pee behind your TV unit rather then share a tray.

ExpectTheWorst · 22/09/2020 08:08

I'm going to get 2 trays as I want to put them in 2 locations at the start anyway, so there's always a tray handy when they need to go!
I'd definitely get 2 food bowls, if nothing else so I can make sure each one is eating ok (I've heard a few tales of one cat being greedier and eating the other one's portion).

We are getting very excited (me more than anyone else lol). I'm going to need some tips on introducing the kittens to our dog, but I think that's a new thread (I've read up on it loads, but real-life experiences and tips are always help).

We have a brother and sister and while they were close when they were young, they just tolerate eat other now. Still, we got a kitten recently and he's been tormenting them - made me wish we'd got two so they could play together and leav the older ones alone! Sorry, not helpful... tbh if you can afford jabs, catteries, insurance and food for two, I'd get two just because kittens!

Two is always better than one, but three is even better! 😂

Two are easy. Three and you don’t have enough hands!!

SuffolkNgood · 22/09/2020 17:16

@Tadpolesandfroglets and i believe that if you're getting three you may as well just get four..? 😂

Oh don't! My girls are 2.5 now and so I'm broody for another. Would love a little ginger boy 😻.

In terms of 'stuff' mine are indoor cats. They are fine with a decent sized litter tray each, separate food bowls and a larger, shared water bowl.

We're planning on letting ours out once they have been castrated, but ideally I'd like them to be home with us most of the time. I also would be happy if they used their litter trays rather than going outside somewhere.

@ExpectTheWorst
Ours go outdoors but do regularly come just to eat or use the tray. they treat the place like a bloody hotel Grin

sweetkitty · 23/09/2020 11:34

Definitely two
