Our cat is 19 and a half she's in good health still brings us the occasional mouse and cuffs our staff on the nose if she gets too close... I was just wondering what's the oldest cat you have had is?
Our cat is a more sleepy now and often sleeps quite deeply and doesn't always wake if I come in, will she just not wake up one day? Do cats do this? Dh seems to think she might just disappear off one day I hope not, I would hate that.
I hoping we've still got her for a while I would love to here about your elderly ladies and gentsSmile

My girly is 19, she is a black and white moggy. She can't jump up any more but she can leap a fair way from the chair to the bed.
She likes to go out for a stroll outside everyday but mostly sleeps a lot, her preferred sleeping place is in my wardrobe, older cats like the security of an enclosed sleeping place so I leave the door open for her.
Since she had radioactive iodine for her uncontrolled thyroid problem last year she's become quite roly poly again. It is just an injection and they have to stay in the cattery for a week which she didn't mind so nothing invasive.
She's a lovely girl and wakes me up very early by batting my face with her claws out or stuffing a paw in my mouth because she knows that will get me up faster Grin
Here she is playing with her favourite toy, the catnip banana.

My tortie was almost 23 when she died last year. Her age went right off the chart at the vets; I think the human equivalent was about 102-5.

villainousbroodmare · 21/09/2020 00:47

I'm a vet; I put a documented 28 year old (indoor) cat to sleep last year. But he was in wretched condition. I wish some people would have a good look at some of these ancient struggling cats and call it.

My old girl was 21, and in good health until the final week. My new boy is 4 but the size of a horse so won't make old bones.

CausingChaos2 · 21/09/2020 23:07

@villainousbroodmare What’s the typical life span you see in cats?

Pretty gutted reading this thread that we haven’t had one survive past 13. Have we been unlucky? Always get them to the vet at the first sign of illness, feed good quality food etc. Would have loved an extra 5 or so years with our little cats.

SunbathingDragon · 21/09/2020 23:15

My 21 year old still has a very content and peaceful life although she rarely ventures outside other than to drink rainwater these days.

villainousbroodmare · 21/09/2020 23:42

15 is old for most but some animals get great years beyond that. There's a lot of luck involved too.

Our neighbours had a cat, who was 22 - but she had dementia. She used to go and sit in the middle of the road, oblivious of the danger. Luckily for her, we live in a quiet cul de sac.

Aquamarine1029 · 22/09/2020 17:22

My first cat lived until 22. She was very small and such a lovely little thing. She was very healthy right up to the end when she had what I suspected to be a heart attack.

SassenachWitch · 23/09/2020 13:17

This thread gives me so much hope!

My girl is 11.5, and I always tell the kids she's going to live until she's 35, they think I'm bonkers.

I'm hoping for at least another 10 years with her.

StCharlotte · 23/09/2020 19:31

I lost one at 23. She'd been left age 16 by the previous owners of a house we bought. After 8 years with her I was quite sad when she went. She was tiny and looked like a kitten. She was right as rain right until the day we had her PTS and I think she'd had some kind of seizure.

To the person who asked if they just go to sleep, my favourite ever cat did just this. He's was only 14 but used to sleep very deeply and one morning just didn't wake up. That was 15 years ago. I still miss that cat so badly.

hopefulhalf · 23/09/2020 19:38

I know of a cat who was run over at 28 as her eyesight was going.

Itllbeaninterestingchristmas · 23/09/2020 19:48

20 he had dementia for a few years but it got very suddenly got worse. The ok dementia was peeing in one corner of the kitchen, only going out in the garden and forgetting he'd been fed. We were worried he’d go off and die somewhere but he always came when called.
A slightly younger cat got poisoned and he came back home we found him unconscious in the morning in his bed.

betteroffdead · 28/09/2020 15:51

just lost my boy. He was a british shorthair, aged 16 and 3 months. I hoped we would have him longer. He had arthritis but developed kidney failure. He had got quite bony too.Sad

have another BSH, she is nearly 14 and in good health, although she is thinner than she was.
