Cats being neutered and spayed, what to expect?

My young cats will soon be going to the vet for their operations.

What were your experiences of this, how are they afterwards and how long does it take them to recover?

Boys cats you would think nothing had happened to them jumping about like usual maniacs. Girl cat was really annoyed with the little suit we bought her to stop her getting at her stitches. She was walking like she was on fire, she was disgusted by it! But she wasn’t groggy or anything. Eating well playing etc when they returned home.

My 2 girls were absolutely fine, they were jumping up on the windowsills on the day we brought them home. I was expecting them to be groggy, withdrawn, angry but they were completely their normal selves. They didn't even try to lick or scratch the stitches.

They did both go on to have some issues with the would opening but this was probably because they were so active straight away.

Mrs cat went today. Dissolvable stitches and liquid drip painkillers for three days. She’s out of her cage and back in her normal place, eating and drinking etc. Just not jumping around. Vet said three days before she’s likely to try that.
Mrs cat is feral and believed to be around 5 years old.

Both cats (siblings) came back from the vets, and once they came round properly, were back to normal! Female cat was jumping up the windows after flies the same day! She didn’t bother about her stitches, which I thought were quite high up!

They were 5 months old; but old enough to spend all weekend mating!

Girl cat was like as if nothing had even happened to her.

I have a male and female cat. Both were fine after.

However, the vets instructed me to keep the cats from jumping, running, prancing about. This was impossible Grin

How do you stop a cat/kitten from running around like blue arsed fly?!

fantasmasgoria1 · 17/09/2020 20:42

With previous male cats they sat down a bit tenderly and were sleepy after the op but OK next day. My female cat I have now was sleepy as expected and she was a bit protective of her wound. I made her a couple of onsies out of leggings legs as she hated the cone. They did the trick and she healed well. To make onsies/body suits etc you can buy them but if you type in kitten sock onesie it will give you an idea of how to make one. Personally I think they are more comfortable and better.

Boy cat acted like nothing happened. Girl cat had the cone of shame, which she detested, so I made her a onesie, and we spent a day or so with her getting it off and me putting it on and her taking it off and me making another one and her taking it off and me putting the cone back on and her doing all she could to get it off before we went back to the vet who said she didn't need it. Neither seemed in much pain although he had metacam at home afterwards and she didn't seemed unfair.

Boy cat will wash himself and think "I'm sure there was something here last time I looked"

I was expecting instant deletion but it was more of a slow deflation.

Interesting to hear your experiences thanks. I'll look up kitten socks / cat onesies (they sound quite cute).

I hope Mrs Cat feels better soon Bargebill19.

Foster Cat was spayed yesterday. She was very sleepy when she came home and didn't eat anything. This morning she is off her food but has eaten a little. My own cats were back to normal v quickly. Mine were 9 months. Foster is adult, maybe two. Perhaps that makes a difference.

Oldraver · 18/09/2020 11:22

Two previous male cats sulked for a few days and didn't move off the sofa

Ernie removed the cone within 10/20 minutes or so of being hone and acted his usual whirlwind self.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 18/09/2020 12:40

My 2 kittens were done on Tuesday past, she was more groggy at pick up and peed the carrier on the way home.

He was fine, just wanted to watch out of the car window but he had the runs until yesterday evening.

I put both in a large dog pen to make sure they rested (tray, carriers, beds, play tunnel, water all inside). Light food offered after a couple of hours - kitten milk so a nice treat.

About 4 hours after leaving the vets, offered normal food which was wolfed down. Put a sheet over the pen and left to rest quietly overnight. Wednesday morning, both were normal little bundles of energy, she looks at her side every so often and looks confused.

Last night both of them were climbing the curtains . All well, the only tell tale sign that something happened to them this week is her shaved area on her flank.

A general tip is for jabs, painkiller injection, microchip and anything else that might need done to be done at the same time as it is a lot easier to do for a sleeping cat when knocked out to do as much as possible.

Bargebill19 · 18/09/2020 13:31

Mrs cat is up and about - gave me the ‘look’ over her shoulder. But she has eaten, drunk and used her litter tray. If all goes well Monday is her day to decide whether she stays with us, goes back to her old ways or becomes a garden cat.

TroysMammy · 18/09/2020 20:19

Haribo was like a nutter the evening he was brought home after being castrated. He totally ripped up the vet's 'your cat will be sleepy after his op" manual.
