If your cat suddenly went off it’s food....

What was the reason?

Our cat has always been a keen eater (dry food and portion controlled as recommended by the vet). He’s suddenly lost interest, is more lethargic than usual and less vocal (he’s usually very vocal...part Bengal).

He has eaten and drink a little but much less than usual. Second day of being like this.
He’s just flopped out in the sun, meows/purrs a bit if we stroke him.

We have him his flea treatment couple of days ago...not sure if it’s a side effect if that....

What's the state of the tray? That's usually what vets ask first - are they eating and drinking.

Could be the anti flea treatment but might be a UTI?

dameofdilemma · 10/09/2020 16:17

I'm not sure if he's weeing/pooing as he almost always goes outside so 90% of the time his litter tray is dry/clean.

He's eaten a bit of his morning feed (maybe a quarter) and I did see him drink water this morning. Nothing since then and usually he's meowing relentlessly for his feed from 3pm...
Was the same yesterday evening.

He's a bit of a predator so am wondering if he's killed/eaten some creature that's disagreed with him...but he's done that lots of time and been fine.

Our cat has done this a couple of times over the years. I may be wrong but I've put it down to him get bored of the same brands and flavours of wet and dry food. We mix it up as much as possible now, there's so much on the market it's quite easy to do but his wet food has to be with gravy and not jelly

The other thing is worming. You should worm every three months. We've resorted to a paste and not tablets as he will just leave them. We put the paste in with some tuna which he loves

Animals get bored of the same food just like we do

dameofdilemma · 10/09/2020 16:45

He's had his worming tablet (mixed in with some wet food, he fell for it..).
Am hesitant to change his food without speaking to the vet as he's a bit overweight so don't want to make him properly ill. Will try him on a bit of wet food later.

I’d have taken him to the vet by now, being quiet is a big red flag for bengals.

dameofdilemma · 10/09/2020 21:12

He’s perked up a bit, eaten all his food (and meowed for it) and had lots of cuddles.
Will still be calling the vet though, its hard to describe but he doesn’t seem himself (but is still eating).

It was cancer :(

BovaryX · 11/09/2020 10:15

I also think that you should take him to vet. My cat is part Burmese and he had a life threatening urinary blockage which I only caught just in time. I was hesitant about taking him to vet and he was admitted for surgery and could have died. I am not trying to alarm you, but I would advise you to get him seen because it sounds like something is wrong with him. Good luck.

Blade of grass stuck up nose

Blade of grass stick down throat

Stomach tumour

Flea treatment makes all mine more sleepy for a few days tbh

BovaryX · 11/09/2020 10:30

It could be that he has been bitten in a fight and has an infection. The bite is often hidden below the fur. Both mine have had this and the symptoms are lethargy, lack of appetite.

CausingChaos2 · 11/09/2020 12:16

Sadly has usually meant something catastrophic. Cancer x2 and another complicated case that ended up at a specialist vet. Consequently if they’re off their food I wouldn’t hesitate to get to the vet.

kidney failure, had to be pts,

How is he doing, OP?

Our girl who is usually very greedy suddenly went off her food last year. She was desperate for it, yowling at her cupboard at feeding time, purring when it was put out, and then just ate a little and mooched off. She was absolutely fine in herself, no change at all, and I just had a feeling it was her teeth.

It was indeed her teeth, which was a very expensive little adventure, because our insurance didn't cover it. But she was back to her usual greedy self within days of the surgery - if very indignant that she wasn't allowed biscuits or treats for a month!

I also noticed in the very warm weather earlier in the summer that she wasn't wolfing all her food down as usual, more coming and going with it, but she's back to licking the dishes clean again in two minutes flat now. I think if it's very hot that can sometimes have an impact too.

dameofdilemma · 14/09/2020 21:31

Well the cat was eating properly again by Friday but we phoned the vet anyway. He advised to see how he was the next day and if any doubt to bring him in.
Cat was back to normal, vocal, active, chasing squirrels and meowing for food. Suspect he ate something dodgy.

This is the cat who once brought back some charred chicken leg he probably found leftover on someone’s bbq....Blush

Glad he’s doing fine. We had a day in the summer when madam was very sick overnight, and a bit sorry for herself the next day - she was fine by dinner time although we gave her just a small portion of dry food, but I suspect similar afoot!
