Hand hold please - kitten with diarrhoea

Hi there, I'm looking for some support and encouragement as our kitten has been struggling with diarrhoea for two days now and has had several accidents all over the house.
We think we know what may have triggered this off so we're hoping he will soon get the bug out of his system and he seems well and in usual good spirits (in between the bouts of pooing). His bottom is clean and healthy looking. I'm just hoping this is not a usual thing with kittens and need some encouragement, thank you!

Poor thing, might be worth a visit to the vets if it carries on for much longer, kittens and puppies can dehydrate very quickly

Oh dear, Colin has an appointment in a while as he has had diarrhoea.

Its worth seeing the vet

BaitandSwitch · 08/09/2020 14:46

Our kitten has been to the vet today, as he started to vomit yesterday evening. The outcome was fine and apparently our kitten is very healthy but had probably eaten something that has made him poorly. However, what surprised me is that the vet suggested to keep him on dry food only, and that we could dispense with the wet canned food as in the vet's view, the canned meat is rubbish!

I have had a look on the web to see what advice there is out there, regarding wet versus dry feeding. As you'd expect, it's inconclusive either way! So kitten / cat lovers, what do you all do?

For upset stomachs it can be worth trying lightly poached chicken breast for a couple of days. It’s not good long term but does seem to settle their tummies down. I always feed wet and dry food, I’ve seen both recommended.

Has kitten be dewormed?
Has a faecal sample been screened for giardia?

One of my cats was prone to diarrhoea until I switched on to only dry Royal Canin food. My vet said that it was absolutely fine and he would get all the nutrition needed. He is on it for years and no health problems so far.

Very rarely he still gets diarrhoea but I think that some neighbors loves to give him some food when he appears on the door step looking 'please feed me I have not eaten for days'... Did have to warn them that cat is on special diet and explained why.

I found out that this tablets work well: Johnson's diarrhoea tablets (you can buy them on Amazon and suitable for cats and dogs from 12 weeks age) combined with Pro-Kolin + paste.

I also second poached chicken breast.

Our cats have always eaten dry food only from kittens based on vet advice. They eat Royal Canin and have access to water at all times. It also means you can use an autofeeder when away for short periods eg a night. We were also advised against tinned/pouch wet food. Dry food eaters need plenty of water for hydration. Sounds like your kitten's diahorrea was a one off but if there are any continuing issues we have found probiotic paste really helpful for our cat who has a sensitive stomach alongside sensitive / hypoallergenic dry food. Good luck and enjoy the kitten :)

Mine have a mix of wet and dry. Only one of mine tends to drink water so I like it that wet food provides the other one with extra fluids. Royal canin is expensive for the lack of meat in its ingredients. I use thrive dry and encore dry which are both grain free. I give wet food twice a day alongside

Thanks everyone for your advice. I examined the blurb on our dry food (James Wellbeloved) and it states it is a complete food for kittens, and he likes it - so we'll continue with that. However we intend to give him half a tin of kitten tuna as a daily treat, so we'll see how he goes. Thankfully after a day of doing no poos at all, he did a poo today in his litter tray and it was more solid ... fingers crossed our little chap is on his way to recovery. Certainly he appears to be in good and lively spirits.
