This is our latest foster cat. Basically she has the soul of an elderly lady finding that the shop girls in her favourite department store no longer treat her with sufficient deference. She’s very disappointed with our care and squeaks her dismay at length. She now condescends to sit on knees, even though they’re really not up to scratch but the slightest movement earns a glare and a swift departure.
Her fur is odd, it’s coming out in handfuls, you can literally pluck tufts of it out, all fluffy undercoat fur. You can see in the picture that it looks odd. Any ideas? She will happily be brushed from her middle back but touch her head and you get a hiss and a hard stare.

She looks so sweet.

You need to up your game cat slaves.

Have you tried a fleece or fake fur throw on your lap?.

Which brush are you using?

Chemenger · 02/09/2020 10:41

She will only sit on a lap with a blanket in place. We are trained.

She came with a slicker brush, if she sees it she runs away, but if she doesn't see it first she's happy to be brushed. The brush is full of fur after one pass at the moment. I tried a comb but that got stuck and pulled, very angry squeak resulted.

Has she had her ears checked?

Chemenger · 02/09/2020 10:54

She's had a once over at the vets and has, for once come with a pretty full record of vet checks. Her ears look nice and clean.

She's certainly not going to starve!

Chemenger · 02/09/2020 13:30

Like many little old ladies she has a healthy appetite. And she's not slow about letting us know if a bowl is not full enough (never mind empty).

Ashycat is very much the elderly lady..... Only my mind draws in slippers and a towelling robe when she slouches down the hall in the mornings to her water bowl.

Basically she has the soul of an elderly lady finding that the shop girls in her favourite department store no longer treat her with sufficient deference.

That is such a fab description!

Chemenger · 03/09/2020 09:17

She’s settling in now, head rubbing is now permitted at certain times (although it is quite hard to tell when those times are) and she will sit on the sofa. I have removed handfuls of fluff, mostly by just plucking out tufts, and her coat looks better now. Pretty much time to go up for adoption.

Aw you must get so attached. Does she go directly from your house?

Chemenger · 03/09/2020 10:20

Yes, normally the adopters would come and meet her here but at the moment we are doing a delivery service.

EachandEveryone

I used to foster. I once had a very elderly cat. A 91 year old woman came to look at her, lady sat down, I put the cat on her knee and the cat sort of looked around and went, "right, this is where I'm supposed to be"

It's surprisingly easy to let them go when they are a perfect fit.

Chemenger · 03/09/2020 12:10

I had exactly the same experience sashh a very bad tempered older cat (I think she was 15) just instantly fell in love with an old lady who came to meet her. One just wanted a cat to sit on her knee the other just wanted a knee to sit on. The lady opened to door of her cat carrier and the cat went straight in as if to say “at last, I’m going home” and that was it. There is always another foster to take in, unfortunately.

@Chemenger Yes I've had a few. I had a really bad tempered cat, she scratched the first person to come to see her.

She was rehomed and a few weeks later I got an Xmas card of her in front of the fire and a message 'from her'. I don't have a fire, that is obviously what she wanted.

I also fostered a couple of cats who's owner was in a refuge so it was always intended they would go back once she had a place for them.

So my carer and I took them round tot he new house and opened the carriers.

Another thing I do not have is stairs, they found the stairs and we could hear them running up and down 'chatting' about the stairs.
