Anxious cat

Hi,

So, I’ve been using a feliway plug in adapter for my cat over the last week, she’s very nervous and has groomed herself bald in places (belly, tail, paws, fur is thinning on her face) I haven’t seen much of a difference but the website said to give it a week which I was doing,

However, today I found the adapter smoking and my cat was very distressed near it. I’m absolutely under no circumstances purchasing another one, nor am I feeling like I trust their products now.

Can anyone recommend anything? I’ve heard catnip can work, but other than that my cat calming knowledge is very slim.

Thanks

Zylkene chills them out but it’s made by feliway too.

I would try to find out the reason for overgrooming. Can an allergy be ruled out? My cat Micky used to overgroom herself before she came to me. The first owners hit her and locked her into a tiny carrier for weeks regularly where she had to sit in her pee and poo. That’s where the overgrooming started. The second owner (her boyfriend‘s mother and brother were Micky‘s first owners) lived in a small flat and had two other cats and a Labrador. Micky still overgroomed regularly. It stopped as soon as she moved in with me. I don‘t have any other pets plus I took Micky to the vet when she moved in and had her spayed (the second owner‘s other cats were spayed/neutered).
I would try to get to the cause of your cat overgrooming itself, preferably with the help of a vet. Medicating might stop the overgrooming but it does not eliminate the cause.

I’ll look up Zylkene thank you

Thank you for your advice @mia184 I should have said, I’ve taken her to the vets, they believe it’s stress and there have been a lot of changes in my house (a large necessary clearout that took away all her hiding spaces) they advised I use feliway, I called them today to ask for other options and they could only recommend the spray.

Can you buy her a cat tree with a hooded compartment she can hide inside?.

Maybe we need to approach this holistically.

I’ve been looking at these, unfortunately in my current house it’s not an option, there will definitely be one in my next house (mine is up for sale) she currently has a little hooded bed, and likes to crawl under duvets to hide, do you think I should find more ways to introduce hiding spaces?
