Skinny cat or just summer coat/body?

My cat often looks skinny this time of year due to having his summer coat but this year I can feel his spine and ribs, he seems happy enough but is very picky with food. I am trying to help him gain weight by tempting him with nice food such as sardines. I’m not sure if i should take him to the vets, he hates going and hates it isn’t the car. Other than being a bit skinny he seems healthy, not being sick, still bringing home the occasional bird/mouse.

Does anyone else’s cat lose weight in the summer?

Any ideas how to fatten him up?

Has he been wormed recently?

Yes, a couple weeks ago, I do him often as he hunts.

Can you tell if he’s lost weight? If you can’t tell do you have a kitchen scale to put him on? If you do you could call your vet and compare his current weight to his weight last time he was at the vet.

Is he quite old? My old fella got quite skinny towards the end of his life.
It sounds like you need to get him checked by a vet so see what's going on.

My boy is so skinny at the moment, he looks like a whippet Shock As soon as the clocks go back he starts piling the weight on and chubbing out 😺

He does go skinny every year, I can remember a couple of years ago I was contemplating taking him to the vets then autumn came and he was back to his fat self. He’s a big ginger Tom, he’s around 9/10 years old so not that old. He’s happily been eating expensive wet cat food today, he normally has dry food so hopefully this will help, he’s been really picky with dry food lately.

Have him checked out if you’re worried. Our ginger boy is skinny too. Vet says he’s perfect, that most people’s cats are way too fat and that they’re supposed to be lithe.

Is he of slender build, long thin tail? Some cats have different body shape. If any doubts about actual appetite then get him checked at vets as appetite in cats is a big indication of problems. When you stroke him are his spine and hips very pronounced? If so he sounds underweight and could have a medical condition & needs a check.

He doesn’t have a tail (hat it amputated when he was 2) 🤣 this seems to make it harder for me to judge his size, he is quite a big cat, would look much bigger with a tail, he seems to fill out in the winter but never overweight, he has been moulting loads and he spends a lot more time outside in the summer, mainly sleeping in the garden. He had cancer 3 years ago and I was told he probably wouldn’t make it but he made a full recovery.

I think he just gets lucky with food in the summer and that on top of his summer body makes him look skinny and scruffy.

I can feel his spine when I stroke him. He is already looking a bit better after feeding him posh cat food.

Mine is far in the winter and skinny in the summer. And it is a huge noticeable difference as well.

My boy is younger than yours but seemed to have lost weight the last couple of months. The vet said he's in 'perfect condition' - as a PP said most cats - including my other cat, an older girl, are overweight. They wanted an accurate measure to be sure and I can only weigh him with me on the scales which is not exactly precise!! If he's well in himself I'd just spoil him a bit - my boy is having more wet food in small quantities but more often and loving it (as is she Hmm despite my best efforts...)
