Anyone ever dealt with a broken cat tail?

I'm absolutely gutted, my poor little girl has come home today with a broken tail Sad (what I suspect anyone).

She is eating and walking fine but obviously whinges when I try to take a look.

I'm fairly sure I can see bone sticking out as in its actually broken the skin.

I'm waiting for the vets to open in half an hour but just wondering if anyone's had this and what I can expect from the vets?

I'm assuming the likely outcome is going to be amputation Sad

I've no idea how this has happened. It looks like it's been trapped in a door or something but she is such a shy cat I can't imagine her going anywhere near someone's house, she usually just stays very close by to ours if she goes outside.

It definitely hasn't happened here I don't think, I would have heard her yelp.

I'm glad she's still eating and drinking, I gave her some tuna just now and she wolfed it down.

No advice, sorry, except stop her eating and drinking as she'll likely need an anaesthetic.

I hope she'll be okay Thanks

Poor puss, we had this years ago. My mum slammed the back door on my cats tail by accident, he had a terrible habit of waiting till you were through the door and shutting it behind you to make a mad last minute kamakasi dash past. It had to be amputated, but he recovered almost immediately and it never seemed to bother him in the least.
I hope the vets open soon, an open feature must be incredibly painful and an infection risk if left untreated

Bollss · 22/08/2020 08:25

Oh poor baby!

Not quite the same but when we got out cat as a kitten he had a broken tail. Unfortunately the woman we got him from "didn't notice" and it set completely wrong. It doesn't bother him at all.

It's possible they will amputate but try not to worry too much I'm sure she will adapt. Flowers

One of our cats came home with a broken tail one day. Luckily, the fracture was fairly close to the tip, and the amputation doesn't seem to have made any difference to her.
Good luck to your girl!

Pelleas · 22/08/2020 08:30

I was worried my cat had broken her tail because she was dragging it and couldn't lift it properly, with the top 1/3 drooping. It actually turned out to be an infected bite and was sorted out very quickly with antibiotics. It healed up and her tail was good as new. It's hard to tell with cats because they won't let you examine them when they're in pain, but it's a good sign that she's walking OK and eating.

Lovemusic33 · 22/08/2020 10:30

My cat broke his tail when he was 18 months old, vet bandaged it but sadly the tail was too badly broken and had to be amputated. He recovered really well and is now ten years old, he still hunts, climbs and hasn’t really noticed his tail had gone.

ElvisPawsley · 22/08/2020 11:18

We're back!

So it's not broken but the vet thinks it's been trapped in something and so the end of the tail has died basically from the cut off of circulation.

Unfortunately she is having to have it amputated about half way down but vet thinks she will be fine and said it actually looks a lot worse than it will feel to her, he said as it's died, it likely isn't as painful for her as it looks which is good.

Should be able to pick her up this evening.

thank God I've got insurance is all I can say after seeing the likely bill!

Sorry she is losing part of her tail, but it's good to hear she isn't in much pain. Hope the amputation goes well Flowers.

hellsbellswithcherryontop · 22/08/2020 12:43

She should be fine, our dcat had to have about a third of his tail amputated after I trapped it in the kitchen door and degloved it. He still likes to stick his tail in the way of doors but so far we haven't had another incident

Hellbentwellwent · 22/08/2020 16:09

Glad it’s getting sorted. How much did the bill come to? I’ve never had pet insurance for our cat... I was really nervous the last time we had to take him to the vet for a paw pad injury but it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as expected even with him needing surgery.

ElvisPawsley · 22/08/2020 16:26

It's £570

Poor girl. It will add an air of awesomeness to her. She can now put survived tail injury onto her CV.

Lovemusic33 · 22/08/2020 20:07

@ElvisPawsley

It's £570
I paid over £800 and that was 7 years ago Sad

Hope your cat makes a speedy recovery, mine bounced back very quickly and he had his whole tail taken off (he has a tiny stump).

DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/08/2020 14:08

This happened to DM’s cat. The tail died and had to be removed. DCat doesn’t notice and is healthy and happy.

jessstan2 · 23/08/2020 14:24

Take her to the vet! They have Sunday emergency services.

Many years ago mine came in with half her tail torn off! She wasn't bleeding for some reason but we took her to the vet straight away and she had an operation to tidy everything up (and lived to 19).

Your cat will be in severe pain when the shock wears off so please don't delay. I expect her fracture can be repaired. Poor little thing.

PeanutDear · 23/08/2020 14:26

The cat has already been to the vet @jessstan2

Gatekeeper · 23/08/2020 14:32

one of mine many years ago had a broken tail and it was amputated almost down to his bum. He was fine though and lived happily on for a few years more

nasty for him how it happened though...heard cheering out of my window and looked out. He was being swung round by his tail by a group of yobs Sad

ListeningQuietly · 23/08/2020 14:36

The cat will take a few weeks to readjust balance jumping with a shorter tail and then you'll never worry about it again.
Astoundingly resilient creatures

iwantmyownicecreamvan · 23/08/2020 14:59

Our cat adapted very well and very quickly. She had a very expressive little tail - it looked funny sticking straight up and when she wagged it. Once I got over the upset, I felt it just added to her quirkiness.

jessstan2 · 24/08/2020 04:02

@PeanutDear

The cat has already been to the vet *@jessstan2*
Oh good, sorry I must have missed that.

I'm sure she'll be fine, the pain killers the vets prescribe are very effective.
