2 girl kittens or a girl and boy? Which is better?

Hello
We have a 12 y/o female cat and got a female kitten over lockdown. Kitten is very interested in older cat and desperate to play. Older cat tolerates her but does not want to play - she is the stereotypical aloof cat who doesn't even really interact much with us either. Kitten's Mum has just had another litter and I'm considering getting another kitten for her to play with as I really wish we had got two at the same time. Kitten is now 6 months if that makes any difference. In your experience do 2 girls or a girl and a boy get on better when they are from 2 litters?

We have two girls, although they are sisters as we got them at the same time.

They are an absolute dream, get on really well. They are 2.5 now.

That said I have just messaged a vet friend of mine for advice as I'm broody for a 3rd and really want a little ginger boy!

Your kitten will be growing out of her attention seeking phase soon so tbh I think getting a third younger kitten would be a mistake.

Aw they are gorgeous @MintyCedric let us know what your friend says.

@IlanaWexler why do you think it's a mistake? That they won't get on?

I think your existing adult cat might really get the hump with you if you introduce another annoying kitten into her life just as the other one is starting to grow up a bit. Can't you just play with the young cat yourselves?

IlanaWexler · 19/08/2020 23:15

A 6 month old kitten and an 8 week old kitten are at very different developmental stages, plus cats are naturally solitary and territorial. So yes, a new kitten will likely upset both of your existing cats.

Thank you @IlanaWexler

@Bunnybigears of course we play with the little one. I was asking for advice.

Cats are weirdos !!! I had 2 girls ages ago from same litter ... they didn't like each other !!!! .. my ginger boy who I have now loves the cat next door who is a younger boy .... I don't think you can ever tell what cats will do ... that's why we love them !!

Cats like who they like. I have three girls who are related and the older one tolerates the younger ones. They hang our together but that is it. No snuggling. I had brother cats who adored each other and sister cats who weren't fussed. My suspicion is that bringing a boy cat into an all girl household may cause problems but it may not because, cats.

Do you know you're absolutely right! They are funny little things aren't they. My Mum has just got a new puppy after her dog dies at the beginning of lockdown and has brought him round a few times. Kitten loves haring about the place with him which is what got me thinking. Appreciate all of your comments, thank you!

Is the person you got the kitten from going to neuter her cat do you think?

GinIsTheOnlyTonic · 21/08/2020 10:42

She had got out the first time before neuter and came back preg. After that litter she was booked in to be done but a bit of a wait due to Covid and managed to get out again. I do believe the long wait to be fair. I was told to contact the vet when ours was 4 months which I did. They booked her in for the first appointment they had and she will be 6.5 months by then so a 2.5 month wait. It is a shame for poor Mum though.
