Getting two farm/rescue kittens later this week and have a few questions.

We’ve been told to keep them in one room for about a week then introduce them to the rest of the house after that. So we think the lounge will be the best place initially, with the food and litter tray in there. Then we’d move their food and litter tray to the kitchen when they can roam a bit more. Will this confuse them?

When I had cats as a kid, the litter tray was only used when they were little and eventually they just went outside. I prefer the idea of their “business” being contained rather than all over the garden etc but also would be happy to not have a litter tray in the house. But we can’t have a catflap and would prefer to keep them in overnight so not sure it’s a good idea to not have a litter tray....

Then, night time. Do we just shut them in the lounge overnight?

Finally, sofa scratching.. we have velvet new-ish (less than 1yr) sofas... I just saw a tip on here about putting catnip on a scratch post which seems like a good idea. But am I naive to think we can totally avoid scratches??

I’m sure it’ll all fall into place but any tips on these points would be much appreciated.

We’ve had our two for a few weeks. We kept them in the lounge at first, then let them out when we were around during the day. We still shut them in the lounge at night, just so we know where they are. I’m nervous about them getting out through the kitchen into the garden (they’re not allowed out yet) so we’ve kept the litter tray and food in the lounge for now. Eventually we plan to move the food and litter tray into kitchen, but will wait until they’re allowed outside.

Well, we could shut them in the kitchen at night but if we only keep them in the lounge during the day, they won’t be familiar with the kitchen. Plus we’ve got open shelving in the kitchen so they could jump on plates etc. Plus no soft surfaces in the kitchen, though we’ve got them a bed which we could put in there.

Or we leave them in the lounge with the sofas......

We kept ours in a downstairs bedroom then let them roam after a week. Is your lounge quiet or will it have family in and out all day? We were told to leave them somewhere quiet and not to disturb them too much whilst they get used to things. Leave them plenty if toys and hopefully they won't scratch the sofa.

We lock ours in at night time so have an indoor litter tray. They rarely use it, I've caught them pooping on my lawn and in my next door neighbour's vegetable garden lots of times Blush they have an indoor and outdoor litter tray, I've done my best but can't control their poops.
