Is our cat a Norwegian forest cat?

So Mr Chester came to live with us at 8weeks old after being found with brothers and sister. He has huge feet, thick fur which seems long but short too (like a double layer) furry ears and is now at 14weels nearly as big as his short haired older sister.
By chance I saw about norwegian forest cats. Do you think he is or is he just long haired (never had a long haired cat before)

I’d say definitely not, he’s not long haired enough and no lynx tips x

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 17/08/2020 16:42

ears are not floofy enough or set right, he could be a disguised German Shepherd puppy though with those ears!

They're huge aren't they? His paws are nearly as big too 😉
Thanks both

Who knows but he's incredibly cute!! I love the way his stripes suddenly stop halfway across his back.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 17/08/2020 16:51

He's very very pretty and looks like a dsh or dmh (domestic short or medium hair) to me.

talkingkrustydoll · 17/08/2020 16:56

I don't think he is but he may be related to my giant eared boy.

@Riv12345 so gorgeous!
@talkingkrustydoll what a cute kitty.
He is so so lovely. Our other cat is a very independent rescue cat who only has fuss on her terms whereas Mr Chester actually comes when called for fuss which is a huge novelty for us!

When he was a kitten he was quite short haired
I didn't think he was a Norwegian forest cat

So Mr Chester might well be a Norwegian

bellinique · 17/08/2020 19:47

Oh look at those gorgeous big paws! If he grows into those you'll have a big kitty on your hands! He does seem big for 14 weeks but it's hard to tell from photos. My 10 month old is 12 lbs and still growing!

IsolaPribby · 17/08/2020 19:55

No, he definitely isn't, so obviously you can't keep him. I will PM you my address so you can send him straight to me. I don't care about his nationality!

(Only half kidding......)

delilabell · 17/08/2020 21:51

Haha @isolapribby I'm afraod he's going nowhere. He let's my dd carry him around like a baby all day, puts up with m ds' meltdowns and let's me fuss his fluffy belly. He's a keeper 😂

He is a lovely cat but no not a Norwegian forest cat. No cat is actually a breed unless registered so. I have a Norwegian forest cat he is 4mnths, he is a registered pedigree from champion lines. He does have a grey mark on his head which is common with white kittens and goes by a year usually. He has the classic pointy face and large ears. Also Norwegian forest cats are known for not being vocal in regards to crying but make a range of chirping and trilling noises. This is Falkor

@Riv12345 is yours a registered NFC he is very fluffy but doesn't have the ruff, face or ears that is standard in nfc.

Cat breeds are an artificial concept. They are just a name for a cat that has specific traits that have been selectively bred for by people. The genes that are responsible for those traits all exist in non pedigree cats. Sometimes cats that haven't been selectively bred end up with exactly the same traits as a breed by chance. It looks like that might be the case with your beautiful boy. It doesn't make him a Norwegian Forest Cat though because that is just the name for a cat that has been bred to have those traits, and your cat wasn't.

Norwegian Forest Cats are slightly unusual in that before humans decided to selectively breed them, natural selection is responsible for many of their defining traits (thick fur, large size).

Bengal cats are an exception. They are a hybrid between 2 cat species so they are genetically different from any other domestic cat. Even a non-pedigree cross-breed cat that has Bengal heritage is always going to be a "Bengal", even if it doesn't look like the breed, and can't be called a Bengal for the purposes of breeding or cat shows.
