Hi,

Can anyone let me know how much roughly we should expect to pay to get our cat seen by a vet and to get a prescription for flea tablets or similar?

We've been buying over the counter and it's just not working

The only over the counter flea treatment that is effective is Advantage. Indorex supposed to be good for treating the house.
Think my vet charges about £35 for a consult then charges for the flea treatment. I have a monthly plan with the vet and that covers flea/wormer and annual boosters

greendonut · 16/08/2020 13:02

Thanks @dementedpixie

We covered the house in Indorex last weekend but I've found two live fleas today (on my son!!). I'm really at the end of my tether.

I'm arranging for the council pest control to come to the property but that seems a waste of time and money if we can't effectively treat the cat.

I'll pay whatever it takes!

At the minute it feels never ending

I wouldn't bother with an appointment just ring them up and ask them for stronghold - we had a huge flea problem last year and it nuked it them on the cats and topped up by spraying indorex

greendonut · 16/08/2020 13:11

@ivfdreaming oh I thought we would need an appointment for them to be able to prescribe something!

Have they seen the cat before? They would normally need to see them and weigh them before dispensing a prescription strength product. My cats are seen once a year for jabs and then I can just pick up monthly flea treatments and 6 monthly worm treatments without having to take the cat back

greendonut · 16/08/2020 13:39

@dementedpixie not since she was a kitten, no. So my guess is they'll need to see her.

I'm going absolutely crazy here. It's my other half's cat - he had her before I moved in and I'm so mad with him too. I feel like he hasn't responsibly looked after her.

dementedpixie · 16/08/2020 13:42

what flea treatment is used on the cat?

greendonut · 16/08/2020 13:43

He does a monthly frontline subscription from pets at home and that's it as far as I'm aware....

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 16/08/2020 13:48

frontline is often ineffective. I think pets at home sell Advantage. Maybe try that instead

Vinorosso74 · 16/08/2020 13:49

Stronghold is prescription only.
Our vet charges £30 for a consultation; another not much further away £50 but they have less mark up on medication.
Ours charges £13 prescription fee and we order 6 months worth of treatment online.

greendonut · 16/08/2020 13:53

Thanks everyone - not sure to give advantage a try as my final resort before going to the vets.

Or to just go to the vets anyway.

For the house I've tried Indorex and that seems to have stopped them biting me but I've seen two live fleas today so I'm not sure if that's the old eggs hatching or if it's been ineffective.

Think vets and council pest control is my best bet now.

Advantage is the treatment I get from the vet as part of their healthy pet club

dementedpixie · 16/08/2020 13:57

if the cat is treated with an effective treatment then the fleas will get killed with contact from it too.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/08/2020 17:26

I’m cross with him too, if she hasn’t been since kittenhood she isn’t vaccinated either is she 🤦🏻‍♀️. Does he not like his cat?.

He’s very lucky it’s just fleas. Is she chipped? If you chip her register her in your name so you can take her with you if you split.

Mine was chipped to me for that reason.

I think it's about £70- £80 all in, its quite expensive but the prescription stuff I get kills everything and you get about 9 months worth.

Myneighboursnorlax · 16/08/2020 18:33

I used to work at a vets and we would offer “free of charge flea checks” specifically for the purpose of prescribing flea treatments or written prescriptions for flea treatments. There would be no appointment fee unless it was a case of “oh while we’re here can you also check...” which people used to try sometimes. I worked for a big chain, not an independent vet practice, so would be worth asking if your practice offers similar.
